T42 construction - no more titanium?

#1 Post by trodriguez » Tue Jun 01, 2004 4:18 pm

I was browsing the tabook and noticed that the construction of the bottom cover has changed from titanium-reinforced CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic?) in the T41p to just carbon fiber reinforced plastic in the T42p. Am I going to miss the titanium? :? I'm assuming it made it stronger.

Huh, weird. The normal T41's again are just carbon fiber reinforced plastic, but the T40's are all magnesium-reinforced.

From the tabook... picking random models from each T4x series:

T40, p16: "Magnesium alloy in the top cover, titanium-reinforced CFRP in bottom cover"

T41, p20: "Magnesium composite in the top cover, titanium-reinforced CFRP in bottom cover"

T42 14", p29: "Magnesium alloy in the top cover, carbon fiber reinforced plastic in bottom cover"

T42 15", p24: "Magnesium alloy in the top cover, carbon fiber reinforced plastic in bottom cover"

... meanwhile the current X40 is all magensium allow where the X31 was the same materials as the T40/T41.

Iam sure that any of those above combinations is much stronger than the ABS plastic most other manufacturers use.

Well, 2373-3HU and 2379-DJU are both SXGA+ T41. In the tabook:

2373-3HU: carbon fiber reinforced plastic in bottom cover

2379-DJU: titanium-reinforced CFRP in bottom cover

Just because "titanium-reinforced" isn't mentioned doesn't mean it's not there. I thought all 14" T41/T41p/T42/T42p have the same case (?).

It may just be an oversight.

As for ABS, R series and G series use ABS exclusively.

What is the difference between a magnesium alloy and a magnesium composite?

I forget that IBM makes more that just the T and X series LOL
But again the T and X series are much more sturdy too.

if anything, i would have hoped for more reinforcement in the lid on the 15" since the greater suface area allows for more flex (no pun on the flexview)

Does anyone have pictures of the insides of these things? I've never seen a picture of the inside of the case. I'd like to see the carbon fiber and titanium. I looked through Anandtech's review and they have pictures of everything except for the case.

Sigh... My T41 (23739-HU) has all of these construction/quality problems...

-right side of keyboard raised
-right side of keyboard flex
-cdrom gap
-palmrest flex (left side, PCMCIA slots)
-LCD bulge
-battery is loose (Sanyo battery - not to mention it came with only 90% capcity left)
-LCD hinge doesn't close 100% tight

every single problem i've read about in here, i've got it. thankfully, everything except dead pixels...

clayman,
consider yourself fortunate.. the only thing that i cant live with are dead pixels..

the keyboard things are easy fixes..
the cdrom thing is quite normal (believe it or now)
the palm rest is also quite normal (although, annoying.. it's simply that it's a really thin piece of plastic.. it'll flex if you want to bend it)
that lcd buldge thing is new.. i dunno what that's about..

i got the sanyo battery too.. it's not crazy loose. it only wiggles if i wiggle it, you know? and the lcd hinge isn't airtight either..

oh well.. :?

Thanks!

Guess you can't really see it, except for the magnesium cover.

I just read up on Toray. They're the largest producers of carbon fiber in the world, according to their website.

Toray Industries, Inc. of Japan is the recognized worldwide leader in the carbon fiber industry, having pioneered development of PAN-based carbon fibers over 30 years ago. The Toray Group, including its US-based subsidiary, Toray Carbon Fibers America, Inc., is the world's largest producer of PAN (polyacrylonitrile)-based carbon fibers, with manufacturing and distribution facilities in the United States, Europe and Japan and a current installed capacity of 7300 tons per year.

It's just poor resolution on the photo, they're black, not grey.

Base cover is Titanium reinforced carbon fiber plastic, LCD housing is Magnesium alloy.

I don't know for sure. I did some research on this awhile ago, but I lost the links, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Titanium composite has the best absolute strength against impact and flexing when compared to ABS plastic and Magnesium alloy.

However, Magnesium alloy has the greatest strength per unit mass. In terms of absolute strength it is stronger than ABS pastic but weaker than Titanium composite.
