ThinkPad 600X System Boards

Can anyone direct me to an IBM site that describes the various system boards and part numbers for the 600X series of ThinkPads?

I have looked at Ebay and found system boards with the following part numbers; 08K3198 and 08K3199. What is the difference between these boards? Both supposedly are 650Mhz boards.

I have a ThinklPad 600X 26454EU that I want to upgrade to a speed step sytem board and use an 800Mhz processor. What is the difference between a 2645-5Fx and 2645-9Fx ?

I have tried to install the 800Mhz processor in my 500Mhz system board and the speed step appplet but it will not boot up even though some on this forum have said it will work.

Any help would be appreciated

I have a 5FU and a 9FU. The 5FU came with Win98SE pre-installed and a 6x DVD-ROM drive. The 9FU came with Win2K Pro and a 24x CD-ROM.

You can also go to www.pc.ibm.com/support and enter any type and model and get its exact configuration.

The URL is fine. It isn't supposed to take you to any particular file. It just points to the directory where they can be found.

Well, whaddya know? If I drop the file name from the link I gave, it doesn't work in Mozilla 1.0. Neither does the link in the FAQ. If I give a file name, both links work just fine in Mozilla.

Both the FAQ link and the boulder one work fine in IE.

08K3198=08K3199=08K3110. they all support speedstep technology. Include 2645-5Fx, 5GU, 5HU,9WU, 9ZU and -9Fx .

since 2645-8PU has a originally PIII500 CPU, it has a 08K3199 M/B, and can be upgraded to PIII850 with speedstep.

If it had a PIII 500, then it does NOT support SpeedStep. SpeedStep is only included on 650MHz boards. That being said, 800MHz should still have worked in the 500MHz machine, just not at 800MHz.

Roger, what happened when you tried to boot your machine with the 800MHz CPU in place? What OS are you using? Intel's SpeedStep applet does not work and is not needed in Windows XP because that technology is included in XP.

few days ago I also bought a Thinkpad 600X with a Pentium III 450MHz build in. I want also upgrade the CPU to a 750MHz Pentium III with Speedstep knowing that it will only run at 600MHz. But if I can get an cheap motherboard supporting Speedstep it would be nice and so I looked in ebay for the models you talked about and found the 08K3199 for about 50$. But in the description they say something about the 600e and not the 600x? Is it the the same mainboard? Does it really support Speedstep? And what is the different between the 600x and the 600e?

Sorry, I'm wrong, the motherboard at ebay is called "30L2875" or "30L2726" an the "08K3199" is under the compatible IBM FRU'S list!? They are not right, or?

I am back after several months respite.

I have asked the question on several internet forums as to whether there indeed is a difference between the 600X PIII 500Mhz system board and the 600X PIII 650Mhz board. What I have heard is that the 600x 650Mhz system board utilizes SpeedStep and the 600X 500Mhz does not. I have also heard that the two systems boards are exaclty alike and only the processors are different.

I have an MMC-2 PIII 800Mhz SpeedStep processor bought on eBay. My current ThinkPad is a 600X PIII 500Mhz 2645-4EU running WinXP Pro SP2. I have tried to swap the PIII 800Mhz processor into the 2645-4EU with no sucess. I did a clean install of WinXP SP2 and the 2645-4EU would not boot up. All I got was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I then installed the Intel SpeedStep applet and again no sucess. Many individuals have claimed that the swap of the 500Mhz with the 800Mhz is a no brainer and works on a 2645-4EU.

Ocassionaly on eBay, a PIII 650Mhz system board is up for auction. If I buy this board and swap out my existing PIII 500Mhz system board will the PIII 800Mhz processor function correctly? Or should I buy an original PIII 650Mhz complete laptop on eBay and then swap in the PIII 800Mhz processor? The cost difference is about $300.00 and would like to avoid if possible.

I am sticking with my 2645-4EU because I have the SelectaDock III docking station that can take three PC cards and various hard drives.

If it's any help the later model 600X should still work with the Selecta-Dock III as far as I can tell. I'm not a TP600 expert, but have done a little reading on the IBM site. My understanding is the docking connector on all the 600 series is the same and any of the docks should work (at least to some degree) with any, though some special drivers may be needed. You should certainly have no problem running a later model computer on an earlier model dock, though there may be some driver issues going the other way (later dock w/early computer).
