Thinkpad T400/T500 available August 5th

#1 Post by andrw » Tue Jul 08, 2008 11:23 pm

I'm pretty sure the source had previously listed July 15th as the date the the T400/T500 would be available. It is now August 5th.

it is not surprising. see to this: Most leading notebook vendors will have a selection of new Centrino 2 models on display, although you won’t see all the good stuff right away. Vendors won’t be permitted to sell, promote or advertise Centrino 2 notebooks enhanced with Intel’s vPro hardware-based management technology until August 4, some three weeks after the actual Centrino 2 launch.

This completly sucks. Why launch it on July 15th if a vendor isn't even able to advertise the new machines? Delayed from June 3rd to July 15th (fake date) to August 5th, and then probably receiveing an ordered machine in late September due to shipping delays or component shortages... *sigh*

It doesn't sound like I'll end up having a laptop for college with all these thinkpad delays. Intel needs to stop screwing this crap up and get their head in the game.

Put XP on your X31. That would be a fine machine to get you by while waiting for the T400.

Plenty of good and inexpensive ThinkPads around to get you through the start of college and also to hold you over until the new T series hit the 20% off sales...

I think I might just go ahead and order a T61P before the July 14th sale ends :(. Who knows when the new series will actually come out and I've been waiting for quite some time while limping around with my aged battered current laptop with a broken hinge in the screen.

Is it worth waiting for the new series when it does come out? Is it going to be that much of a difference?

I think the August 5th date is pretty firm, and is really being dictated by Intel and not Lenovo.

Most of the vendors will be able to ship quantity at that point too.

Those are very subjective questions. A lot of it depends on your particular hot buttons, what's important to you. It also depends on the final specs and pricing as to whether its worth it.

I'm intrigued by the hybrid graphics, LED backlit displays, and lower power CPUs potentially in the new T400/T500 systems. Since I'm not in dire straights, and since my state has a Sales Tax Holiday the first weekend of August, I'm willing to wait a little and see.

That date does leave around 2 months before I go to university but it all depends on the price as to whether I'll try make my T41p last a bit longer - I did just get Linux working beautifully for the first time in two years... I doubt the same can be said for the T400.

Just saw this, thought I'd pass it on. As said above it does make the 08/05/08 release date look pretty good.

After my dreadful experience scratching my SXGA+ screen on my T42p I'm looking forward to buy a new T400/T500 laptop. How much do you estimate those laptops would cost when they are released.

Totally agreed. I can't wait much longer. *sigh*
All blame Intel.
But at least Lenovo should have a press release??? No official news about the new models whatsoever.

That's normal for Lenovo (and IBM before them).

just thought id point this out, but i still think the t400 will be released on tuesday. I dont know why everyone is freaking out because the byu website wont offer theirs until august when it previously said july. The plan all along for intel was to releease the discrete graphics based chips on july 14, allowing companys to make laptops only based on discrete graphics. Because of paperwork issues, they werent going to release their integrated graphics chips until august 5th. As we all know the previous t series notebooks had the option of either discrete or integrated graphics, so assuming they stick with the same plan for eventually offering both options, who says the date on that website isnt for when all the t400's and t500's will be released. Not to mention when the intel chips were delayed for the june 3rd release, intel made a press release days before. Where's the press release this time? There isnt because its coming out tomorrow. Also, if lenovo wasn't planning on releaseing the new line on the 15th, why would they end their sale on the 14th? Not only does all of that tell me that its still coming out on the 15th, Hp has already announced their centrino 2 laptop to comeout right after the release of centrino 2. In fact the HP DV7-1000 is on their website right now. The downloads manuals and drivers are avaliable for it right now. If im wrong about all of this fine ill figure that out in a few days. Im writing this because too many times I have seen people turn rumors or speculation into fact without any substantial evidence. If im missing something here please let me know but as far as im conserned its still coming on tuesday.

Lenovo sales always end on a Monday night. New sale starts on Tuesday.

Some people seem to confuse announcement date (which might very well be July 14) and general availability (GA) date (which might very well be August 5).

That makes sense except intel officially announced the centrino 2 back in early march.....the only thing left is general availability.

If you believe there will be new Thinkpad models ready to ship tomorrow, you're an optimist. To say the least.

I wouldn't imagine that they will be shipping tomorrow, hell I'm just hoping for an announcement with possible pricing to confirm the new models. I wouldn't expect them to start shipping until early mid august at the earliest if they are announced tomorrow.

idk i guess we will have to see...there have already been centrino 2 laptops available for sale in some stores and on newegg, however they were pulled because they were being sold before the july 14th release...if thats the case then i cant imagine lenovo or any other company for that matter would risk losing sales to these other companies that have already been selling them and will proabably put them back on shelves tomorrow...

I thought we talk about Lenovo announcing and making available new Thinkpad models (not Intel). Am I missing something?

The new Thinkpad models with the new Centrino 2 processors are being held back until the new chip is released. That's where Intel fits into the discussion, no new chip no new Thinkpad.
