New Guy with some upgrades and Q's not 56K friendly

#1 Post by Doonster » Thu Jul 31, 2008 11:59 pm

Hey all and hope your all having a great day Im Aaron your new super poster HaHa, but be considerate with my spelling and grammar im dyslexic thanks

So here is my story i used to live in England then moved to china with a company before taking up the opportunity to work in china when we got here i was given two laptops that we worked on till the company went bankrupt and dint pay us so we kept the laptops as pay.

A T40 And a T41 both utterly useless!

so after some searching on the internet i found you guys and that i can upgrade my machine to make it that bit less cr8p,

i only think they are not to good because i built a quad core pc and it sort of defies every rule in the world hehe

ok well the T41 is now in my mums hands who complains that after a while it hangs she browses the internet all day doing nothing and after a while the laptop just stops and freezes, common sign of HDD failure or just getting old even tho the shock protection and a HDD test said its fine........???

second is that the T41 just does not like having anything installed on it it becomes unbelievably slow and almost passes out sometimes turns it self off like its run out of virtual memory.

thats the two small probs with the T41 i cant really touch that now as my mums in no rush to do anything,

Right to the T40 my current laptop...

um what can i say its slow and poorly upgraded......they were refurbished before coming to us and upgraded with [censored] parts spec of the T40 is
1.5GHZ 1.0GBRam 30gbHdd :(

now just to make it worse the 1gb ram is 133    the HDD is 45000rpm      whoever upgraded these laptops was a evil bugger and they were upgraded 1 year ago so all the new stuff was out.........

so anyway ive got the UK keyboard layout that i hate might swap it for a Chinese one just so i can get the right layout

im going to get the 1.8Ghz processor and going to get the prices of them soon as far as i can see its like 900rmb new cheap US and Auzzie Dollar is 8rmb for 1 so that's about $100 new in box. memory is like gah expensive! lol 900rmb for 2gig but i might be able to get some second hand for like 200rmb i live right near a computer city its like a shopping mall full of new and used computer parts and accessories

the DVDrom drive in my T40 is kaput i can probably get one for like 100rmb burner as well. battery is new and working well paid 200rmb for it lasts 4 hours,

replace the [censored] 30gb hdd thats seen better days to a 250GB or a 120GB ruffly about 500Rmb to 900Rmb for both ill get the prices today as its 12am as i type.

now putting all that together 120gb HDD the 1.8GHZ processor 400mhz on front bus 2Gb ram at 2.33mhz im thinking about upgrading the fan for the CPU somehow as i already run high temps see some of my current stress tests and photos. prob get a new lenovo one and see if i can make it fit or build an external cooling. will make it and show you how it goes.

ok picture time
cpu info

upgrades to the bios and so on

now i use this laptop now for my photography so its running PS.CS3 and so on so it needs to work well as my 450D with line veiw and HDD input support works well on my this laptop so i want to use it to store and edit my photos when im on the move

ok well i pulled the laptop appart and found that i am already running 2X512mb 333mhz so i think they never told the motherboard that it was running that so ill put it back together and do the memory update thing and see if that does it.

otherwise got the prices back on the memory and the HDD they did not want to sell me the CPU because they say that the thinkpad T40 wont work with the 745 only the 1.5ghz and the 1.6ghz

but he did give me a price on a 2.0ghz that he said will work in it. he gave me to numbers that i think are the MHZ but who knows it could also be a processer but i will have to re-search. the numbers are 400 and 533 and the price of 670rmb

120gb hitachi 6500rpm 380rmb and samsung 120gb 7200rpm 315

seagate 80gb 200Rmb about ten british pounds

now the memory they dont sell anything under a 333mhz but the motherboard will read it at the max that i can so as far as i know the T40 will do 266mhz so thats what it will come up as in the bios and in windows but for a kingston 1gb 333mhz its 300rmb so for two that makes it 600rmb

totaling this up too 1570rmb

so it will be a disision to retire this laptop or get a viao that i was offered for 1600rmb its a PCG-52N and i cant find nothing on it on the web lol but its a metal casing on it so it looks nice and durible

heres todays uneventfull photos

Moderator edit: Points for mentioning the 56K modem unfriendliness but four photos of 323KB to 445KB AND which do not add anything to the discussion (your words: "uneventful photos") earns them link status, not inline images. Please keep images ~ 50KB or this thread will be moved into the Pictures forum.
