Where can I find DVD decoder for T21 and Win2K?

#1 Post by Abraham » Fri Jun 04, 2004 1:59 pm

I have a hand me down machine. In the process of cleaning his stuff off the box, he managed to remove the DVD decoder. It still has the Mediamatics Player (stinks, I know, I have others) but without the decoder it is up the creek without a paddle.

I have looked around the IBM site and unless it is part of the firmware update, I cannot find it.

Would it work if you installed WinDVD ? (which is the bundled software with the T21).. if that would give you the decoder, - then I have a copy of my Windvd install catalogue from either my T20 og A31p, - I think it would work.
Yell if you want to give it a try. (it's a 25 Mb. download)

I still have the player software but I believe the decoder is part of Windows. This machine is owned by the government and the Windows CD is held in a certain office. Being a friday afternoon, the lady that works in that office has gone home. I get on a plane tomorrow to fly to Norway and was hoping to watch a movie or two during the 12 hour flight.

When I run the player software it tells me that the machine does not have the DVD decoder and that no player software will work without decoder software or hardware.

Apparently all wrong

I have reviewed some articles at Microsoft and apparently SW decoder ARE part of player software. I will uninstall this one and install a disk of PowerDVD I have at home. I don't use it there because I have an SD Hollywood Plus and use its SW.

Thanks for the help.

Interesting topic because the fellow that bought my T21 seems to be a babe in the wood s when it comes to setting up a TP. First he complained about the time to boot, but then explained that the battery wasn't fully charged, and he was booting on battery power... it took 6 minutes. I told him to do a full recovery with the IBM CD and he now says it's dropped to 2 minutes, but I still don't know if he's booting from the battery or mains. But back to the DVD problem (new).

I never had a problem playing a DVD but he claims that the DVD now plays for a while and then the system freezes in "freeze-frame" and he has to remove the battery to unfreeze and then reboot.

I suggested he go to IBM's page and download the latest DVD Player files and gave him this link:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4GV37K

I think we also have a language problem as he seems to have a problem explaing what he's doing in clear, concise English. I'm a little miffed, and I'm going to keep trying to help him out because I know the machine is fine, but I suspect he might be messing things up because of his lack of experience. My last suggestion was to call IBM tech support. The machine went out of warranty June 1st, but maybe IBM could be more helpful than I can be. If you guys have any ideas, I'm all ears. Hope that link above helps.

BTW, is there any other DVD software that could be installed on a T21 that might be less buggy than IBM's? Although I recall trying Power DVD v.3.0 and it didn't seem to work that well.
