IPS screen seems very dark... any thoughts or fixes?
IPS screen seems very dark... any thoughts or fixes?
I have a 15" sxga+ with IPS screen. I am very pleased with the screen along with the T60 but I have one qualm. It seems too dark. I have the settings for brightness on high for the screen along with no power saving modes. Is there something I am missing? When watching movies it is like a pain to watch in the daytime.. increasing contrast/brightness by using the program would just washout the colors... Would you guys think that this IS a problem or is it just a IPS thing which I have to deal with. I have warranty till the end of the this year.. but is it an issues that I have to part with my computer for couple of days? Any thoughts or fixes?

... a quick suggestion: With reference to the thread Dim T60 Flexview Panel - Questions and more precisely this post - this question: Have you set the LCD brightness is set to ”Normal” or ”High” in the BIOS? Please check and then report back here - thank you, Sir!
(- reason for asking is that I am not quite sure exactly what you mean by saying that you have "set the brightness to maximum"? However, I guess you mean doing this by increasing it to the max through using the Fn + Home keys on the keyboard?).

You might also try going into Display Settings, ATI tab and check your color calibration settings.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Re: IPS screen seems very dark... any thoughts or fixes?
I've used 5 or 6 Thinkpad IPS screens and all of them were slightly dimmer than most of the >30 Thinkpad TN screens I've used. I think quite a few forum members have reported the same phenomenon I suspect it's just a "feature" of IPS screens, just like the dark/shadowy corners at the bottom.

First of all I would like to thank all for the responses (and for the upcoming ones too.)
Well in my bios for display, the brightness is set on "high" along with the thinkpad config settings that is set to the highest brightness. I do have a slight dimming portions at the corners of the screen but that seems like it occurs on all IPS displays...
It is still dark but tolerable in office lighting...
I'll try calibrating some more ATI settings but personally I don't that is the culprit. Any other suggestions...
(Although I am checking out the dim IPS thread now.... thanks for that. Didn't know there was one. Hopefully an answer will pop up.)

200 nits... Don't have a brightness meter but in comparing my 14" T60 with this one there is a huge difference seen when watching the same movie side by side.
Inverter problem? Screen? (Contemplation....)
I'll probably drop by an authorized center for them to look at it first before I send it to the Atlanta depot...
