If you run a dual boot setup with XP and either Vista or Windows 7, everytime you boot up XP your System Restore Points will be deleted in Vista or Windows 7.
System Restore can be set to not monitor the XP partition in Vista. In Windows 7, my experience is that it does not monitor the XP partition by default - at least in a two-drive setup. So as long as Vista or Window 7 is not monitoring your XP partition, your XP System Restore Points will be preserved.
If you use the Ultrabay adapter or some other setup to have XP on one drive, and Vista or Windows 7 on the other, you can disable the Vista or Windows 7 drive in XP's Device Manager, and that solves the problem. One side effect of this is; you have access to the XP drive from Vista or Windows 7, but not vice versa.
What if you have both XP, and either Vista or Windows 7 on the same hard drive? See the tutorial in the link below for a solution.

Re: How to stop System Restore Points from being deleted
Thanks for the hint. Some time ago I was wondering what was happening to all the restore points (I had been having Vista, XP, Win 7 alpha in triple boot for some time...).
