R50P vs T42 Can't decide :(

#1 Post by RS_003 » Sun Jan 23, 2005 5:57 am

Hello,

I have to choose between a R50P or a T42.

Specs R50P:

1.7Ghz Banias 1MB Cache
1600x1200 15"
512mb
FireGL T2 128mb
A/B/G
9Cell battery (6 hours worktime)
3 Kilo's
DVD-RW drive
60GB 7k2 8mb cache

VS

Specs T42:

Intel Pentium 735 M Processor 1700 MHz 2 MB Cache
768 MB PC 333 DDR RAM
60,0 GB 5400RPM (however I heard 95% got a 7k2 8mb)
24x/24x/24x/8x CD-RW/DVD-ROM-Drive
15” SXGA+ 1400x1050 (flexview)
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, 64MB
802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter II
2.5 Kilo's
6Cell battery (specs say 4 hours. But i don't believe that)
Because of the flexview it only got max 2 hours work time.

Well I really cant decide. The R50P has a much better battery so normally you would choose it. But it’s also is a lot heavier and more bulky.

I also heard the R50P's casing isn’t that strong (or of the same material) as my X40's housing. Which is extremely strong.

Nor have I ever seen a R50

So my question:

1: Can some one posts highres pictures of a R50 (P) (and if possible next to a T42 / T41)
2: Is the housing of the same material as of the X40 and T4x series? ( I don’t think so)
3: Is the R50P in real life really that bulky?
4: Which one would you choose? (The R50P costs me 1700 euro, and the T42 costs me 1600 euro’s)
5: Screenshots of a 1600x1200 15” screen? And experiences with working with it. I never worked on a 1600x1200 screen. So is it a lot smaller then the 1400x1050 screen?
6: Go for another one :)

A guy has posted a review of his R50p, but it's in German. Maybe Babelfish can do a translation for you - anyway, nice pictures! Take a look here:

Thx :)

Too bad he didn’t post any pics from the side but only from a top view.
But I must say, it doesn’t look that big now :) (That’s only positive)

So if you see some other pics that are not from a first person view I would love to see them :)

has some pictures. I think the R51/R50/R50p look very similar/almost the same, this way you may find even more pictures ;-) The R5x's are in fact a little thicker than the T42's but with 15" the T42 is a lot bulkier than the 14" model. If FlexView or UXGA aren't the reason you want a R50p take a look at the 14"-models: smaller, less thick and a lot lighter.

I think that (in my opinion) you should get the R50p.
Its not really that heavy and its not that bulky. I have an R51 and its not that heavy or bulky.
The ThinkPad's casing feel sturdy to me and their casing last longer.
I have seen and used an R50(18305AU) and the R50/R50p/R51 all look the same. (I also have seen and used an R40, a G40, and an A21m. I used these ThinkPad's at my school, including the R50).
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

Yes, I really want a T41P (14" SXGA+) but I have to order it @ www.campuskorting.nl and they don't have the T41P. Only a T42 of R51 (and not listed on the website a R50P :))

But I think I am Going to the shop again (have to travel 400 kilometres) to see them both in reallife because I don’t think I can make a decision anymore based on the photo’s because on the most photo's showed in the link only the screen bezel alone was like 2.5cm's thick.

And that’s a lot if you are used to an X40 :)

I agree with the other poster that the R5x's are nice machines; just take a look at my sig ;-) But it's a good idea anyway to see what you want to buy in person *before* you buy. OTOH, though, my purchase was kinda "blind date". I just ordered my machine, just knowing it from a very limited number of pictures. It turned out to look much better than on almost any picture I've seen so far ;-)

Yes, I have been in a shop like 3 months ago and then I saw it, but it didn't look that thick there to me :)

So I am going to maastricht (in holland) to my favorite (www.campuskorting.nl) ibm shop and watch them in reallife, because, idd it did not seems so thick in reallife, and i really would love to have a 1600x1200 screen :)

Yup it did, and it showed a lot less ghosting, but the brightnes of the 15" SXGA flexview was so much better I decided to go for the T42.

Also the hinges where a bit beter on the T42.
And the housing :)

So, the R50P is a jewel, but the T42 is just a tad better (for me) :)
