Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
Hello,
The LCD of my T42 turns dark recently caused by broken backlight, since I've seen pink screen for months and it runs perfectly with external monitor.
Now I try to find a replacing part (a panel or whole lid) but gotta confused by the part number of LCD panel.
There are two options listed in lenovo website which part number is 11P8346 or 11p8348.
my question is:
Dose the part number matter when I'm looking for the LCD panel? since most sellers on ebay do not provide PN and say it is for IBM T4x SXGA+...
My T42 has bluetooth. if I am buying a assembled lid, do I must buy a lid with bluetooth antenna?
I try to save money on my old but awesome T42. So could I downgrade it from SXGA to XGA?
Thanks alot.
btw, if you have a matched LCD or lid for sale, pls PM me.

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
Welcome to the Forum!
I think it is wise not attempting to try to fix the CCFL yourself - see why e.g. in the thread Guide: How to Replace the backlight in a T4x LCD (soon).
From your signature I understand that you have a 14.1" SXGA+ T42 model 2373-3UU. The 14.1" SXGA+ LCD's are the same in T40p's, T41p's and T42/p's - the different types being those you mention FRU 11P8346 (made by ID Tech) and FRU 11P8348 (Samsung). About the difference between these different-manufacturers LCD's, please see e.g. the thread Bought used T41p - screen is rather dim... parts? (more specifically this post and the links pointed to therein). These LCD's are "naked" and does not include neither lid nor antennas.. it is the bare panel itself. The antennas are built into the total lid+LCD assembly.
You may also use a 14.1" SXGA+ LCD from a T43/p in your T42; find part numbers in 14.1" LCD service parts - ThinkPad T43/p (HYDIS=92P6737, HYDIS [lead-free]=13N7046, Samsung=92P6760).
What to do? Cheapest thing is probably to get a (more or less defective) "for parts" 14.1" SXGA+ T4x/p off eBay with a good LCD. If the seller don't know what type of LCD is in a (say, defective) T4x, then check up the specifications yourself on Lenovo's site - see how to find key specifications in the thread How to find ThinkPad-specifications on Lenovo.com?
If you get a complete LCD-with-cover it will (as far as I know; but you may want to have this confirmed!) have both the Bluetooth and the WLAN antennas built in; this is seen e.g. through the 14.1inch LCD service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p - see item #5 ("Bluetooth wireless antenna assembly") and item #6 ("Antenna assembly"). It is easiest to swap am entire LCD-with-cover, compared to swapping the LCD only (in the latter case, you will obviously need to open the cover, dismount the old LCD, and mount the new, and then mount the cover again etc.). Notice the caution in the thread How hard is DIY replace a LCD screen on T42p.. (in this post). Some good illustrations on how-to-dissamble a ThinkPad LCD can be found in the thread T42 NuShield Installation and in the thread Replacing the CCFL of an IBM A31 notebook ).
Alternatively, you may consider putting up a "WTB" (Want To Buy) advertisement at the Marketplace in this forum... all completely trustworthy and very knowledgeable sellers there.. highly recommended place to trade ThinkPad parts.
Downgrade from your present SXGA+ to XGA? I wouldn't do it, but if your funds are very, very, very limited, then you may perhaps be "forced" to do so.
Good luck with getting your T42 back to perfection!
Johan

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
Hi and welcome to the forum,
The 11P8346 is made by IDtech while the 11P8348 is made by Samsung. I don't think the part number matters in this case, since the specifications for the panels are the same, and there's no real consensus on which on which one is better - if there is a difference.
There's a good chance that IBM/Lenovo cannot even sell the 11P8346 since the last where made in 2005, and the company has closed down (when IBM sold it's PC division to Lenovo).
The reason why they don't provide part numbers on ebay is because they are "compatible". That means they are pin compatible, but does not have the IBM/Lenovo stamp on them with the FRU PN, like those you get directly from IBM/Lenovo. However, by the "compatible" screens the manufacturer, contrast ratio, grade or brightness may not be identical to the one you get from Lenovo. But you are guaranteed a screen with the same resolution that will work.
If you buy a lid, and if you have bluetooth, you should choose one with the bluetooth antenna yes. There's a chance it might work without the antenna - but chances are slim, and you'd likely get many dropouts. Also, with a lid without bluetooth antenna, there's no light indicator for bluetooth.
You can downgrade from SXGA+ to XGA if you want - apart from an XGA LCD you will need a new LCD cable. This has part number 91P6786.
Not sure what it is going to cost and what a new SXGA+/XGA panel costs, but if there was nothing else wrong with your LCD, apart from the dead CCFL, services exist that replace CCFLs with new, for example user "Jamiphar" which runs http://www.arndtcomputer.com .

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
On eBay, look for the 14.1" Dell D500, D600 or D610 SXGA+ screens.
Dell uses the Samsung SXGA+ panels with part# LTN141P4-L01.
The IBM-Samsung SXGA+ screen has part# LTN141P4-L02.
AFAIK these should be fully compatible.
I have one of those (Dell LCDs) here at home, but I'm waiting for an SXGA+ LCD-cable.
My machines are only XGA.

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
I would check the panel pinout carefully. I tried a Dell panel and it had a different pinout.

Very interesting tip about using a "Dell" LCD in an IBM laptop... but according to the threads T43 screen replacement trouble and T4x LCD replacement issue the LTN141P4-L01 will not work in a T4x ThinkPad.
Happy Easter to each and everyone!

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
THIS IS COMPLETELY INCORRECT. There are many different interfaces to the 14.1" SXGA+ panels, you can see this information on some of the LCD research websites. The Dell panels are KNOWN not to work with Thinkpads, and that's why you can get a Dell panel so cheaply these days on EBay but BEWARE as you can quite possibly damage your inverter or do something worse, with the wrong panel !! You need to be purchasing a $85 NOS Thinkpad panel, not a $30 NOS Dell Panel !!! Only buy the Samsung LTN141P4-L02 if you buy a Samsung !!On eBay, look for the 14.1" Dell D500, D600 or D610 SXGA+ screens.

The gold standard for understanding screen compatibility is a website called "panellook.,com" :

Here are the signal interface models for the 3 x 14.1" panels that thinkpad T42's support :

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
Tell that to pianowizard who created world's first 14" UXGA T42 several years ago by using a LCD from a...you guessed it, Dell. The same panel was proven to work on T60 with an EDID flash.systemBuilder wrote: The Dell panels are KNOWN not to work with Thinkpads, and that's why you can get a Dell panel so cheaply these days on EBay but BEWARE as you can quite possibly damage your inverter or do something worse, with the wrong panel !!
BTW, if one installs an incompatible panel, nothing will happen to the inverter, but they might blow a fuse on the board.

Re: Replacement for T42 SXGA+ LCD panel
You know, did I say that NO Dell panel would EVER work with a thinkpad? No. I did not. I just said "The Dell Panels" and referred to the particular ones specified earlier in this thread. Go back and read my post.ajkula66 wrote: Tell that to pianowizard who created world's first 14" UXGA T42 several years ago by using a LCD from a...you guessed it, Dell. Did I add new information that has never been seen on this forum? YES. Two panels that quite possibly work with older thinkpads with SXGA+ panels are contained in my posts. New information. Is there any new information in your posts? AS USUAL, NO.
Is it smart to write new threads with this information, when there is an old thread with he wrong information that needs correction? NO.

There's nothing new to be said about LCDs on T4x series.
The last *really* new thing that anyone ever did with that range of machines was done by...huh...ME.
