X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
Hi everybody,
I finally got my SSD. A Kingspecc 64 GB PATA.
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 on it and use the Grub bootloader.
Ubuntu + Grub all works fine; very very fast !!! Boots in a couple of secs.
Windows 7 also boots like a rocket, BUT:
-WiFi does not work. I tried to install both the Vista and the Windows 7 driver updates from Lenovo. No success yet. Anyone?
-Graphic card not installed (only standard).
And I especially made this new thread discuss the best Windows 7 settings for (the Kingspec) SSD. For now I didn't change anything and it seems to run smoothly, but maybe you have even better suggestions (about Flashpoint? Readyboost? Swap files etc.)
Thanks mates!

Install intel chipset files for Vista first, then you can install the video driver.re404 wrote:...

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
Is that the Atmel TPM (Trusted Platform Module) device driver for Windows Vista 32-bit, XP, 2000 - ThinkPad ?
Furthermore I see Intel Chipset Support for Windows 2000/XP, NOT VISTA.
Or do I need something from this page? > http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-54078
Sorry, but the Lenovo drive pages are not what they used to be.
Thanks again!

p.s. I have the idea that the graphical speed in Ubuntu could be a little better (although it's not bad at all as installed automatically, maybe anyone has any idea about this too?)

And now I remember the term I was looking for: TRIM settings for the SSD. Where can I set these in Windows 7, and what is the best configuration?

Kingspec SSD's have TRIM support? Seems unlikely to me.

My apologies, I installed the Win2K/XP version of the intel inf (version 6.1.0.1008). After that it picked up the video driver within Windows7.re404 wrote:Is that the Atmel TPM (Trusted Platform Module) device driver for Windows Vista 32-bit, XP, 2000 - ThinkPad ?

...

It gave a Windows Aero Graphics Subscore 1.9 (1.5Ghz CPU). Gaming graphics remained a low 1.0.
I also had to install TPM, Hotkey, Power Management Driver and FP software.
By the way, BIOS update utility ran fine within Win7 but Embedded Controller firmware would not run in Win7. So I had to use a WinXP image to run the Embedded Control update.
I tried the intel INF file for X40 and it didn't work.

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
thanks so far sjthinkpader,
but I'm still not there ... when I install the intel inf (version 6.1.0.1008) windows 7 goes in a kind of compatibility window where it DOES install the drivers (in /system32 and places like that I guess), but I guess that the drivers are not REALLY used bu windows.
maybe you could tell me the name and location of the drive file so that I can point my device manager to that location.
my device list currently looks like this:

so ... still no proper video, no wireless, no fingerprint and some other devices (but I guess those will be found and defined as soon as I got the Intel chipset drivers right.)
Thanks again.

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
For my X41 with Lenovo SSD, I manually installed Windows 7 32-bit drivers from the Lenovo website (in this order):
System interface
Hotkeys
TrackPoint
Power
Power manager
Active protection
Fingerprint
Atmel TPM (Vista driver)
Icon patch
Chipset, video, and WLAN drivers came with Windows 7 or were downloaded by Windows Update. The video is Intel 915GM which does not have Windows 7-specific (or Vista) drivers. It does not have enough chuff for Aero, but performs quite well for non-video intensive stuff. Had to use the Vista Atmel TPM driver. Mute button turns on mute on but not off. The Icon patch didn't actually seem to do anything.
All I've done for the SSD is switched defrag off.
I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, no issues.

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
thanks bananaman!
i'll try that too in that order...
but: did wireless work right after install?
mine's doesn't.
i only have wireless access, so i cannot run windows update, and for downloading and trying drivers i need to boot Ubuntu everytime. time-conuming, even though it is lighting fast now (the IBM screen actually takes up most of the boot time now - 25 seconds or so - I guess that's because of the 'unsupported' harddrive error 0220 or something like that. did you manage to solve this?)
where would i be without this forum and you guys! Thanks!

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
Since you got the right chipset driver installed, just reinstall the video driver and let the system look for it. I didn't supply a video driver at all.

Thanks gonna try that soon. I'm getting pretty hooked to Ubuntu though! It is great for everything web!sjthinkpader wrote:Since you got the right chipset driver installed, just reinstall the video driver and let the system look for it. I didn't supply a video driver at all.
Maybe anyone has tips on tweaking ubuntu (9.10) for the X41 (tablet) on SSD?!

Yes my wireless worked right after install, Windows 7 had the right drivers.re404 wrote:thanks bananaman!

If wireless isn't working right after install I'll hazard a guess that you don't have an Intel wireless card, but an IBM wireless card. If there are no Windows 7 drivers for the IBM card on the Lenovo support site, try the Vista drivers.

No I'm quite sure I have the intel. Ubuntu lists it as PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] Network Connection.bananaman wrote:If wireless isn't working right after install I'll hazard a guess that you don't have an Intel wireless card, but an IBM wireless card. Maybe I'll just google for a 2915ABG windows 7 driver.
Thanks anyway!

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
I got everything working by downloading vista drivers from the Intel site. Hurray!
What's left: optimal settings for ssd in windows 7. Sometimes i notice small hiccups ... is there a way of increasing a buffer or change settings? Where do I turn of automatic defrag if it's turned on?
Thanks!

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
Automatic defrag is simply by opening "Disk Defragmenter" (just type in the start menu) and make sure that the schedule is turned off.
I am also in the search of optimizations.
I have disabled Superfetch on the recommendation by sjthinkpadder. This is done by running "services.msc" and disabling it there.
I have not yet found out how to disable pre-fetch, which I have also read should be recommendable.
Regards, Martin

Somebody posted instruction on disabling pre-fetch in registry. You should also turn off file indexing. TRIM is turned on by default but at least my Sandisk SSD does not seem to support it.

Hi all,
Thanks to your help and tips my X41 is running super smooth now!
3 things left:
-Aero; is there a way to tweak Windows 7 to try and run with Aero anyway? (I'm interrested in trying http://getpivot.com/)
Haha ... the other 2 issues I solved myself during the typing of this message. Thanks forum!

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
Another problem?
One of the tweaks is to turn Write Caching on. (Is that trimming by the way?)
It doesn't work here with the Kingspec.
Is there a way?

Thanks again!

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
The SSD has internal write cache already. So you don't really need the computer write cache.
TRIM is cleaning dirty free space, not related to write cache.

Re: X41 (Tablet) + Kingspec SSD + Windows 7
For installation I use Lenovo Systemupdate which works pretty good and is capable of downloading and installing all needed drivers and addons. In case of Windows 7 the TPM-chip is the only remaining unknown device. You might install the driver which can be found for Vista however it is functional useless because the old atmel is not supported for bitlocker etc
