Anyone tried the Runcore RCP-IV-P1832-C in an X41 or X41t?

#1 Post by greg.billings » Thu Jan 14, 2010 7:59 pm

I read the 30 pages on the main SSD and did a search, couldn't find an exact answer on the runcore drive.

I have an X41, will be buying an X41t - I am a field rep and need the smallest useable tablet I can get my hands on. Don't play flash video's much and don't care about widescreen so I think the X41t is my best bet. I do use a database appliation but it's based on MS SQL Express and so a multi-core CPU doesn't help me.

Has anyone tried the Runcore part number RCP-IV-P1832-C or RCP-IV-P1864-C in an X41? I saw a thread to runcore's support forum saying there was a 5V issue but I think the user got the wrong drive and it sounds like it got replaced and all is well.

I have seen the Kingspec and used 60GB IBM SSD's on ebay. I did some reading on the BIOS updates and apparently version 2.04 has flag to bypass the 2010 drive error.

Spec wise, the runcore seems the fastest, the kingspec is the cheapest and the IBM branded Samsung works without changing anything in the bios or flashing it. I don't want to mess with a CF card and an adapter - a 300x card of any real size is just as expensive as the Kingspec so that option becomes a mute point.

I intend to use Windows XP Tablet on the X41t although I am intrigued about trying the X41t with windows 7 to see if the ink support is better.

It's not that I want to change your mind... But have you also considered the possibility to install a ZIF 1.8 HDD? I personally consider that their price/performance ratio is better than SSDs. You can get an 80GB disk with adapter for less than 100 bucks.

I don't know your personal requirements in terms of storage space, but as general info the current range for HD goes from 60GB to 160GB, though the latter are pricey.

My 0.02 cents...

I have tried the 64GB model in X40, and had major problems with BSOD.
According to others they had no problems on X41, and mine is working ok in an T43 which is using a similar SATA-IDE bridge as your X41.

The RunCore SSD is very quick, but they have had a lot of compatibility problems as their support forum shows...
It looks like they may have solved the problems for X40, and I am going to return mine for replacement.

Now I am running a 5400rpm Samsung 80GB ZIF drive with adapter in my X40, but it is too slow compared to the SSD when it worked.

There are several versions of 80GB Samsung drive. Single platter, 4200RPM, 8MB cache version HS082JB is the best for performance. There is a two platter 5400RPM version HS08XJC that is actually slower.

sjthinkpadder was faster than me! Could you let us know which model are you using?

I am using the HS08XJC as it was cheaper than HS122JC, I didn't know it was regarded as a slow model.

It was faster than my C4K40 and C4K60 Hitachi drives, but it is 3.3V only. I nearly fried it using the eBay X40 ZIF-adapter in the Ultrabay when I tried to copy my old disk.
In the end I put a regular 2.5" drive in the Ultrabay adapter and used it for backup and restore to copy from the Hitachi to the Samsung.

I'm surprised that a 5400RPM drive is slow :!:

Maybe due to the 3.3v? Or just because is a dual platter? Weird...

Voltage doesn't matter, but size does matter.
Low data density or small disc diameter makes a drive slow.
Even if the 1.8" platters are rotating at 5400rpm the surface speed is probably equal to a 3600rpm 2.5" drive.

Even my 7200rpm 3.5" drive in my desktop was slow compared to the RunCore SSD, so I replaced it with another SSD.

Hi,

Can you please report whether the new drive works in the x40. I really would like to buy one.

thanks

Apparently the reason the older RunCore drive doesn't work well in the X40 is due to wrong voltages. According to a few posts on RunCore's forum, the new version of the 1.8" PATA drives with 3.3V (as supposed to 5V in the old version) seem to work well in the X40. Here's is the link to the thread:

http://forums.tweaktown.com/f78/brand-n ... een-35071/

Start reading at page 6 if you don't feel like going through the whole thread. One person also posted his CrystalDiskMark result, which I think is very impressive!

After reading the above thread, it appears that if you want to put one of these in an X40, you should contact the seller and make sure that it is the new version with 3.3V written on it. I plan to get a 32GB in my X40 from the US seller mydigitaldiscount.com in a couple weeks.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually aware of this one person on that forum, but the Runcore tech support did not seem to be very professional. I would like to see at least one more positive user experience before buying one. Call me paranoid..
