Specs for used notebooks

How do you determine the specs of some of the IBM used notebooks
they offer very limited specs when looking at a particular machine.

they have like 4 numbers then a x#x or xx# or x,letter,x or xx,letter

looking in tabook doesnt do you any good as they dont have xxx codes,

So how do you determine the exact specs
