Microsoft Security Warning - Explorer F1 Virus

#1 Post by emtee3511 » Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:51 am

Guess this is the place to post this -- I missed this MS Security Warning (confirmed by SNOPES) but maybe that is because I mostly use Vista and W7 machines -- I only have one TP that still runs XP, but not sure how I was supposed to have learned about this vulnerability -- received in an email (one of the rare warnings that is actually true.) Apparently Explorer is currently vulnerable to an F1Virus -- MS instructs to not press F1 no matter how many times prompted -- just x-out of the window or close explorer --

Subject: FW: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/f1key.asp

"Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a vulnerability in VBScript that is exposed on supported versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 through the use of Internet Explorer. Our investigation has shown that the vulnerability cannot be exploited on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008. The main impact of the vulnerability is remote code execution. We are not aware of attacks that try to use the reported vulnerabilities or of customer impact at this time."
