BIOS and EC updating with Windows 7

#1 Post by EchoFox » Wed Mar 31, 2010 6:51 am

Can it be done? I tried running it in Windows 7 and that didn't work. I got either:

"DeviceIoControl() returns 2
Please restart your operating system and
execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller
update utility again."

or

"DeviceIoControl() returns 24
Please restart your operating system and
execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller
update utility again."

So tried just copying the diskette version onto a USB flash memory drive and booting from it, but that didn't seem to work. Is there some trick to booting form CD or USB?

This is to upgrade BIOS 1.05 to 1.29, and EC 1.03 to 1.06.

Welcome to the Forum.
From the versions mentioned, I assume you are talking about a T43 with ATI graphics.
Windows 7 is NOT supported for BIOS/ECP updates.
Use an external USB floppy drive. Update BIOS first, then ECP.
(Or insert another T43 hard disk with XP on it, and do it from there. Then swap HDs again.)
For a bootable USB stick, see this: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 8&p=552460
I don't know how to get the BIOS/ECP files onto a USB stick though :?

I have the Diskette versions of both the BIOS and EC updates, but I can't figure out how to get them onto a CD to use them (obviously I can just write a CD with the required file for the update in question, but that doesn't make it bootable.)

Buy yourself a USB floppy drive, much easier than fiddling around to make bootable USB stick with BIOS files on them.
They work an (nearly) all Thinkpads.
