#1 Post by samba » Thu Jun 10, 2004 3:28 pm

When I purchased online , it also added the tax (about 140$) . When I received the shipment notice it does not show the tax. Is IBM chargin tax for online orders? I live Massachusetts.

yes, they have a presence in every State, and so MUST charge tax if your State has one (MA=5%). Bill, on the other hand, does not charge tax.

Yes, IBM/Lenovo are aware of tax free weekends in the varying states, but it wouldn't hurt to remind them when you place your order.

I also live in Massachusetts, I orderd my laptop on the 13 of August when we had the tax free weekend. I didn't care about that tax and credit card was charged. Three days later got a notice from Lenovo saying we understand it was a tax weekend so sign this simple form to get a refund. Well I was billed the 25th and went back to college a week later so I assume there is a check waiting for me on on its way from Lenovo.

unlikely you will get a check..

unless you paid by check or in cash..

more likely a refund/credit to your CC account.. :)

A few years ago when internet commerce was just getting started, there was an attempt to exempt these purchases from sales tax being charged by individual states in the US.

Many states quickly got around that by saying if a company has a physical presence in the state like a store, outlet, service center, etc. then the company has to charge the customers that state's sales tax.

They also coerced many companies with threats of banning state government purchases of non-compliant company's products.

What this does is unfairly turn companies into unpaid agents of the states collecting the sales taxes.

FWIW, California's sales tax laws require it's residents to pay tax on everything they purchase no matter where it was bought.
