Registry maintenance - which utility??

#1 Post by James314 » Sun Mar 06, 2005 2:57 pm

Does anyone know of a good registry maintenance utility? There are so many out there and i have no idea which ones are good. I want one that is  ultra reliable as the registry is something not to be toyed with lightly. Incidently, the reason i want one is to keep things running smoothly on my tp - after a while, ive heard that uninstalled porgrams and their 'leftovers' can cause problems - to compliment diskeeper which keeps files tidy etc.

Id appreciate as much info on this as possible....

thanks,

James.

I use Registry First Aid from Rose City Software because it has solved problems for me and helps keep my ThinkPad running smoothly. I have used RegClean (Microsoft) in prior years but it is no longer being offered. I also have used JV16 Power Tools, but I don't think they did anything useful.

Note: No registry cleaner will correct outright corruption in the registry caused by improper use or malware. So don't have overly high expectations.

IMHO all registry "cleaners" and other utilities should come with large warning labels on them.

I'm not aware of any of them that are worth the false sense of security they engender in most users.

You're far better off to buy an extra HD, make a clean clone of your stable system with your major SW loads (ACAD, Office, etc.) installed, keep backups up to date and you'll always have a fallback for those times when some new application eats your Thinkpad's lunch.
