Personally, I have one R-51, and I think that it is well-built product, has many functions for documentary work with a little graphic game, and also has moderate price. So why do many people here use T-series ThinkPad very much more than R-series ??
Anyway, while many people think that ThinkPad design is awful, I think that it is very classic and beautiful. Anyone agree ??

Classic and beautiful....Yes, I agree. On the note of R vs. T, I would have to say that the smaller footprint...sleeker design and less weight for the same or close to the same options and quality is the reason there are more T users here and in general. In other words, more portability. But to each his own. If you like your R, then more power to you! :) The T and R are brothers of the same mold for sure.

T and R

#3 Post by asiafish » Tue Mar 08, 2005 10:54 pm

I think the difference is really more of marketing. The R-series are designed to be more general purpose and less expensive, while the T-series are the premium models which emphasize light weight, compact dimensions and higher performance.

The R series are likely great machines (certainly haven't heard anyone complain about them), they just aren't top-of-the-line, and thus, don't engender the same passion from their owners.

Personally, I care more about feel than performance, and will take even an old 600-series ThinkPad over the latest and greatest plasticrap from Dell. The R series are a lot closer to my preference than the Dells, but still don't have the solid case feel that the T-series does.

Thats probably why I'm still using a T22 instead of a newer machine. I could probably buy a much more recent R-series with what my T22 would fetch on eBay, but even if upgraded to a Pentium 4 or a 15" screen I'd consider it a trade down from my 14" Pentium 3 T22.

Can't stand the G-series, or the A for that matter. Just MUCH too big and heavy.

Just my $0.02

Though it would not be the first on my shopping list, I do like the A-series, and I do think it held it's place in a crucial market during it's time, the budget corporate market in the early 2000's. To jog memory, early 2000's is when we had the ressecion and not every one could afford a T-series.

The G-series, however, while it looks to be a good machine, I wouldn't buy it. I'd save up the extra dollars for an R series, then decide that since I took the time to save the extra money, hold off just a little longer for a T-series. That's my thought path and many other's as well, which I think is the prime reason the R series is not as popular as it should be.

As for the look and feel of a computer, yes, it is extremely important. I just absolutly love the no-bullcrap professional businss look that my 760 gives off, I'd be willing to trade for a newer P4 computer just so long as it's confortable to use and does not look like a childs toy.

The 760s were nice, but I am very spoiled by a thin case nowadays. I set up an old 390 for a friend a few weeks ago and found it very uncomfortable due to how high the keyboard was off the table (otherwise a very nice feeling machine).

I just don't see any use for a big and heavy machine anymore. If I wanted something to keep at a desk, I'd buy a desktop PC. As it is, the only desktop in the house is a 5-year-old Power Macintosh for my daughter's games, we all use our laptops and wireless networking to get work done. Even when the trip is only to m comfortable living room recliner, a 5lb T series beats the heck out of a 7, 8 or 9lb anything else.

I have an R51 and I love it! I love the R5x's! And I also love all ThinkPad's! I think that the R series are just as good as the T series and I also think that the R series is as thin and light as the T series. I don't really care about weight or tickness/thiness and I want to get all of the the ThinkPad models from each series(I will probably do that when I get older and I get out of college and work for IBM-Lenovo. I want to be their computer designer. Its always been my dream).
Anyway, I think that the R5x's look great with their black case and (this may sound odd to all of you but) I think that they look so adorable with the metal hinges. (I think that the ThinkPad's look so great with the metal hinges).
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

I think it comes down to personal preference .. myself thinking that the T4 boxes are hands down much more attractive than the R5 machines due to the size, weight, thickness and material specifications. Also, the protective coating on the T4 gives it a nice feel and makes it look a litlte sharper than just the average plastic box.

But everyone has a favorite .. and mine is the pretty much tied between the T4 and the X4 since they are like brothers in design and materials.

The 600-series felt even better, with perhaps the most regidly mounted keyboard ever put on a laptop, and that lovely rubber coating or whatever it is on the palmrest and other INTERIOR parts as well as the outside.

The early T-series are also quite a bit nicer in feel than the newer ones, with more rigid construction and better keyboards.

That said, the new ones sure are powerful, and its amazing that they got the weight (on the 14") down to 4.5lbs. For comparison, the small Apple PowerBook (12" screen, built-in optical drive, metal case) weighs 4.6lbs. Thats what I call outstanding industrial design, and with a removeable drive bay no less.

 Are you kidding? I've used the 600E, T2x, T30, and T4x, and the T2x easily has the worst keyboard of them all! It's complete mush compared to the 600E, although infinitely better than anything Dell has put out in the Thin/Light category.

To answer the original poster's question: I chose a T series because I wanted a slimmer and lighter design. However, I do like the R5x series and would recommend one to anyone who doesn't want to pay a premium for the T series.

I chose a R series because really liked it and not because I didn't want to pay a premium for the T series. In the future, when I get older, I am planing to get all of the models of the ThinkPad series.(I want to be IBM-Lenovo's computer designer).

I think a while back, there is no 15" T-series, only 14" T-series. R-series is only 15"

Because I was hard looking for a new R50 series, then discovered I had to buy additional 3 year warranty upgrade.

For the same price you get a T40 series at a blow-out sale, including same features and 3 year warranty!

So I got a new T40p instead of R50, at the same price.
(However, I am stuck with those Ultrabay slim drives, quite useless because there is no market out there to replace with a better DVD burner)
