T43 hangs on the post screen

#1 Post by farhaddad » Mon Feb 14, 2011 11:51 pm

Hi,

I've searched the forum but couldn't find the same exact issue.

I have 2 T43 machines with this same problem. The laptop hangs on the post screen unless I tilt it to the back (Put something underneath it from the Thinkpad's logo side where the HD is.

Both the Hard disk and the DVD drives where tested on another machine and they work fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

It sounds like the Southbridge has come loose on both machines. Contact member poshgeordie to discuss repair alternatives.

Can you reflow the southbridge just like on the GPU?

The problem referred to the OP that the machine is stuck on the BIOS display means there is a problem with the SB or also with the GPU?

Yes you can reflow / reball the SB just like the GPU, though you do have to be more careful because it's quite easy to blow out the SB substrate with too much heat / heat for too long - doesn't make it a great candidate for the ol' heat gun!

And yes I can confirm that in most cases if the laptop is stuck on the Welcome screen then it's usually just the SB and not the GPU.
