Unexpected Win 7 SP1 Startup Time Issue

#1 Post by hhmcsv » Thu Mar 10, 2011 11:04 am

I just installed Win7 SP1 from Windows Update. And my very good boot time of 70secs to fully operational hast now increased to 120secs. Very bad
Anybody experiencing the same ?
Any fixes out there?

Hans Henrik:

While I find the title of this thread ”Microsoft ruined my Thinkpad - SP1” quite imprecise and certainly greatly exaggerated (!), then I surely feel your frustration at the same time. However, for the future kindly consider choosing a more correctly descriptive thread title – please recall that we’re many who read the forum, and if someone is having the same problem as you report, and is searching the forum to try find a solution, then your post does not exactly flash up as THE place to find the answer. In all friendliness… please! Also, on a related note, try limiting your cross-posting (in the thread Startup time. By the way, did you try the suggestion in this post?). Anyway, to try help you with the long post-SP1 boot time in Windows 7, if you Google after slow "Windows 7" sp1 boot you’ll e.g. find the following threads which may, or may not, be helpful:

Windows 7 computer slow after SP1 upgrade - High mscorsvw.exe CPU usage and Windows 7 SP1 Boot Extremely Slow and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 made my computer slow down and Boot time more than doubled after updating to SP1

Personally, I have little experience with Windows 7; I have set up a friend's netbook (a Lenovo S10-3) with Windows 7 Starter, and recently after installing SP1 on that S10-3, I also felt that the boot time had increased (and that even with an Intel X25-M 80 GB SSD installed!). I however didn't start to mess with it - to try reduce the boot time - as it was to live with, for the user/intended use.

PS: Beware that if you use a solid-color background in Windows 7 (e.g. all-black to preserve battery), then your startup-time will be significantly slower than if using some e.g. JPG-background image; see Get Rid of Slow Logons in Windows 7 or Fix Windows 7 slow start due to the Solid Color Desktop Backgrounds or Fix Slow Windows 7 Startup Due to Solid Color Desktop Background.

Let's know if you find the cause for this - I'm in the process of setting up a new T60 with Windows 7, and I'd certainly like to avoid any unnecessary delay in boot. Thanks for solving this problem for all of us!

Since installing SP1 (via Windows Update) I have noticed no degradation in boot up time. This applies to my T510 and my wife's X201.

I have not noticed any slow-down in boot times for Windows 7-SP1...however I did not benchmark a before and after.

Everything seems to run fine in my opinion.

Two machines T61 (14.1" and 15") - everything is fine after install SP1 for Win7.
No changes, nothing worst in boot time subject.

Hi everybody and thanks for the replies - sorry about not conforming to forum rules, but quite honestly my temper was running a bit high when I experienced the result  .
And yes, I have Googled the mentioned threads with no succes for at solution for me.
As I am using my T60 in a way that includes a number of start-ups every day, the dramatic increase in the boot-up-time is a big nuissance.
Worst is of course, that I do not see any benefits from the SP1, but there must be some?

Actually there is not much benefit. SP1 is just a collection of security fixes. So if you've kept Windows updated chances are you already have them. It is convenient for those people who just made a clean install.

At this point best to do a fresh install which you can do with an integrated SP1 image. That is what I did.

With an issue similar to "After seeing the ThinkPad logo screen the machine just waits for about 30 to 40 seconds with simply a blank screen, then it boots normally."

I found after much trial and error that using Compatibility mode for the harddrive solved the issue completely. So much trial and error I can not remember if I needed to do a clean install after the change, or I could do it on the fly with the current OS.

Push Blue Thinkpad button at top of machine
Push F1
In Config goto SATA
Switch AHCI to Compatablity
Save.
It should reboot now...and faster

On SSD this may have other implications....for standard HDD the compatibility mode will NOT be slower than AHCI in normal operations.

Consider 1) you have too many unecessary start up programs. Disable some.
2) too little RAM. Add some
3) slow HDD. Upgrade it.

Using an all black background does absolutely nothing for battery life, the back light stays on and the LCD blocks the light from coming though. If your display was an OLED having a black background would make a difference, however nobody uses OLED displays in laptops (ThinkPad LED displays are only LED back lit, OLED uses LEDs for the pixels).

Actually, I tested different background colors on several Thinkpads with IPS panels and black did minimize power consumption. I guess that means IPS panels generate "black" differently than TN panels.

I believe you did the tests, I know the backlight does not change, so I guessed that it must take juice to keep the pixel in the manner to show color. Searched and -- > http://www.boehydis.com/eng/04_rnd/rnd_08.asp So the panel uses significantly less electricity when it signal to the pixels is Black. For IPS, and even more for VA and TN.

I am happy to be wrong here, because I will use the result. I am going to set my screen saver to black at 2 minutes....I did not like to turn off the backlight so frequently because of concern of too much on and off on the backlight....but the blank screen saver has none of that risk

On the turning the backlight on and off... CCFL lifespan is not affected by on/off cycles. I would bet that inverter life is directly related to how long and how bright the bulb is lit. The CCFL bulb is prolly rated for like 25000 hours (not quite long-life LED... but getting there)

And I can definatly see producing black as using less power (R=0, B=0, G=0)... Nothing to generate, no power used :P

P.S. If you spend a lot of time browsing bright web pages, give Firefox with Greasemonkey a shot... then look for Lights Out... http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/76214
