another MBA killer...but this time...
Hi All,
Sometime ago , we talked about ThinkPad X1 future.
Even someone mentioned that X1 could be MBA killer.
Well , can Anyone tell me why Lenovo couldn't make something like this:
http://www.engadget.com/photos/asus-ux21-hands-on/
In my oppinion , UX21 has bigger chances to be MBA killer than X1 and..I love it

A couple of questions?
1) Do you believe that to be an "MBA Killer" you need to be an "MBA Lookalike" first?
2) Why does something need to be an "MBA Killer"?
My own personal opinion:
There will never, ever, ever exist an MBA Killer. Just like there will be no iPhone killer, iPad killer or iAnything killer. Because Apple's concepts are so different from the mainstream and so unique, that if they are really right for you, nothing else will be. And if they are not right to you - then you probably weren't interested in the first place.

no need to kill it. just create another one. if the manufacturer keep on going this direction. apple will surely become trend setter.

Exactly. It's disgusting to see how Motorola, Samsung and others have been trying to clone the iPad. Dell released the MBP-like XPS 15z just last week, and now Asus is imitating the 11.6" MBA. And of course, countless iPhone and iPod look-alikes have been made over the years. They are unknowingly advertising Apple products for free!kaede wrote:no need to kill it. just create another one. if the manufacturer keep on going this direction. apple will surely become trend setter.

I don't need to MBA-killer looked like MBA however I have to admin that MBA design is great
What I meant was the size , weight , no VGA etc
What I like in the UX21 is:
- screen size
- screen resolution
- no VGA
- USB 3 ports
- new Core i7 processor
The Black Aluminium ThinkPad X series with similar spec with TrackPoint and design would be my next Christmass' dream gift

Re: another MBA killer...but this time...
I just had a similar discussion with a client as he was interested in the Samsung 9 series. While the Apple, Asus, and Samsung all look nice I wonder how they will hold up to everyday use. I would argue that the ThinkPad is more rugged and that the roll cage will offer more protection in a drop. On the feature side Lenovo packs more options into the X1 than the Apple offers. I personally use and love the T420s as it weighs the same as the X1 but gives me a larger display, either DVD or extended battery, etc. If one only wants a laptop as a fashion statement then perhaps the Apple is best. If one wants a serious computer that can hold up under rigorous business use then perhaps one of the ThinkPads is a better option. Calling the X1 a MBA killer is meaningless as you're truly comparing apples versus oranges. Apple is good at selling the sexiness of their devices but like their Iphones when you look inside you will see that most Android phones blow them out of the water. To each his own

don't even try to compare MBA and X1
MBA is for everyone and X1 has a very small "business" sector of the market, they will never compete each other)

Then why does it have a glossy screen?anabol wrote:X1 has a very small "business" sector of the market
Did you notice that the X1 forum is listed under "non-ThinkPad Lenovo Hardware"? The admins don't ven consider the X1 a true Thinkpad.

From Lenovoblogs they used Gorilla Glas to make the display assembly even thinner and have it sturdy the same time. Ther is no matte Gorilla Glas available.

I knew about Gorilla Glass. But to make the screen suitable for business use, Lenovo could have added an anti-glare film.ssd_thinkpad wrote:From Lenovoblogs they used Gorilla Glas to make the display assembly even thinner and have it sturdy the same time. Ther is no matte Gorilla Glas available.

Yes, without an anti-glare film it would be difficult to reduce unwanted reflection off the glass. If they really cared that X1 is for business use, they would not have used a 16:9 LCD with only 768 vertical pixels.pianowizard wrote: I knew about Gorilla Glass. The day I will buy a mac or any other brand whether they are mac killer or not, is when they can come up with track point that is as good as thinkpads.
No matter what anyone says,a trackpad will never beat trackpoint when it comes to precision, speed, ease of use.
Honestly trackpoint is probably 60-70% of the reason that I continue buying thinkpads (keyboard, durability, support being the rest)

Trust me, if you put in the time and effort to learn the touchpad, and if you maximize the speed of the mouse pointer (which is a prerequisite for getting the touchpad to work well), you would realize the above statement is completely wrong. I used to hold the same belief as yours but proved myself wrong about 7 - 8 years ago, after spending several months learning the touchpad.daeojkim wrote:No matter what anyone says,a trackpad will never beat trackpoint when it comes to precision, speed, ease of use.
After mastering the touchpad, you would never be stuck with just one brand of laptops. With Thinkpads' offerings becoming less and less appealing, I think it's more important than ever to wean oneself off the trackpoint.
