I downloaded and tried to install the driver on my T42, but it wouldn't work for some reason. Pressing Fn-F5 resulted in a dialogue box essentially saying I couldn't turn the radio on.

Use the new Software Updater, and everything will be AutoMagic:

It IS a good idea to set a restore point before doing any update, although that DOES NOT work for BIOS.

I too installed the new driver using the new Software Updater and noticed an issue. The driver works fine, but like Cneil the FN+F5 combo now does not allow toggling off or on the radio. The resulting error message complains about not being able to control the power settings for the device and suggests upgrading the driver. It is still possible to toggle the radio using the properties tab for the NIC. I rolled back to the previous driver but FN+F5 still does not work. I will dig a bit deeper later when I have some time.

Are you folks all running the latest version of Access Conncetions?
What Wi-Fi card does everyone have? There was an issue a few weeks ago where the IBM 11a/b/g card required a driver update to work with the newest Access Connections. I know from personal experience that if you had the new driver but not the newest AC then you couldn't turn the radio off.
Edit - Doh! If I read the thread title I'd have seen that this is the Intel card driver. Still. sound similar to the issue with the IBM card. Make sure you have the latest AC.

I have a 2379-r9u with the Intel 2200 bg card. The previous time the install failed, I used the new automatic update program. I re-tried the installation last night by manually installing the latest version of Access Connections (installed successfully), but the Intel drivers still wouldn't work. So the issue is definitely with the wi-fi driver and not Access Connections. My problem is that post driver installation, the Thinkpad can't even turn on the wi-fi radio!
I took the advice from Leon and checked that the ibmpmsvr was running which it is and set to automatic. Still no resolve to the issue.
Access Connections is not installed on my TP but the thought had crossed my mind that there may be some functionality tie in. I may just go ahead and install AC to see if there is any change.
Cneil; Are you able to turn the radio on using the applet on the properties tab for the wi-fi card. This works for me, not as easy as the Fn+F5 combo but works in the meantime.
Another solution that may be worth investigating is to re-install IBM Power Management as the issue appears to be a communication problem between the wi-fi driver and the XP/IBM power management driver(?).
This issue is certainly not a show stopper for me, but little issues like this tend to drive my tech mentality nuts! As time permits I will tinker some more and keep the forum posted.

I got it to work successfully. I uninstalled everything, and then i reinstalled the older version of Access Connections that includes the wifi driver pack. After doing this, fn+f5 worked. I then updated my Access Connections to the latest version using the Software Installer. Everything is still working fine, and i'm using the newer driver. Hopefully this will help.

Have you guys used tried using anything like streaming audio with these new drivers?
I tried out the 9 series drivers on intel's site a while back and discovered that it drops the connection and reinitiates it every 2 minutes or so, which also made the shoutcast station I was listening to stop playing.
I went back to the 8 series drivers and don't have the problem now so it was obviously something to do with them, I spent ages troubleshooting that and the only clue I've found so far to back up my claim is a message board post in german about the same thing happening (and I can't read german).

Voodle; Yes, I have successfully streamed audio & video using the new 9x driver without any issue. In fact, using the 8x driver and no Access Connections resulted in the occasional drop in communincations with my Linksys WRT54G. Using the current versions of the driver and AC have not (so far!) dropped once.
You could run the German message board URL through Google's Language Tool and get a (rough) English translation that may help with your issue.

Hi All,
I've installed the new bg drivers manually and it works fine, I do not have any IBM Thinkpad program installed other than IBM PM driver and IBM batery maximiser program.
I think new bg drivers are complately independent than access connections.

I tried to install the entire Intel package manually over the weekend, just to see if the third time's the charm. Something went horribly awry, and it took about 6 Windows XP system restores before my wi-fi card would work. I kept getting "unable to change the state of 802.11 wireless radio..." errors. For now, I'm staying away from these drivers.

Can you also turn on/off the radio via Fn+F5?Albatros wrote:Hi All,

Just curious, are you guys talking about the Intel b/g that comes with the system or you buy and install it separately?
I heard from someone that generic Intel b/g mini PCI card can't be installed in IBM Thinkpad or can install but won't work, instead we have to the one with p/n from IBM.
