What to do with old T22?

#1 Post by Rameneater90 » Tue Sep 27, 2011 8:05 pm

I have a old T22 just sitting in the cupboard doing nothing. At it's prime, it was worth a bomb. This is the highest spec model. I already tried installing other linux distros on it, driver support is very limited for it.

What are some typical uses for it?

Install Windows XP and then find a smart 10 year old that wants a free computer...pay it forward.

I think there is a related topic in off-topic forum approx. two years ago.

My thoughts...
-- Using MIDI software like Cakewalk, to arrange music
-- Recording vinyl records
-- Playing Internet Radio (e.g. Pandora, LastFM, etc)

Lately, I gave one of my T30's to my GF to enter statistical sample data for her research paper using personal database software (Paradox 4.02 for DOS). There exists a Paradox utility which converts Paradox format into SPSS and MS Excel. Her Intel iCore based machine has problems running DOS programs from a DOS bootable drive (DOS programs only work properly in Windows XP CMD prompt window).

Hmm..... so far I'm considering using it as either a photo-frame or a music aranger via MIDI. I think I might go with the MIDI idea, at the moment, i have a T410 hooked up to my keyboard and that could become a gaming server.... I guess. As for the give-it-away to a 10 yr old idea, it's way too slow to run XP. It often hangs up 1/2 way through the install.

Which would mean it has 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM and SXGA+ display. A very nice machine in it's day. And still not too bad for most common computer tasks.

Well...the above specs suggest otherwise. You probably have a failing hard drive that's giving you trouble.

As to the original question....take a look at The Ultimate List of Uses for Old Computers.

If you mean it stops responding when installing Windows, at about 20-30 minutes left, then I would suspect the MiniPCI card to be the problem. You can try removing it and see if the install completes. If so, you can then replace the card with a known good unit but you'll probably have to load the network drivers (modem and/or ethernet).

Well, it was the MiniPCI card. Dunno why it just decided to not work though. I freaked when Neil said "failing hard drive"... I was going to use that HDD in a ultrabay adapter for my decent Thinkpad :P
Still working out what to do with T22 though. Anyway, I'm gonna clean out the innards tonight, all the dust keeps shooting out of the fan....

I recommend just installing win2k and selling it. Someone out there will appreciate a good basic internet surfer and word processor.

Problem is when you downcycle it into a picture frame or whatnot, is that you take away from it's basic function and only a select few will be able to use it after you are done with it.

If you fix it up as best you can and sell it as a laptop, someone who needs a basic laptop will buy it and ride its functionality into the very ground where it can hopefully be recycled properly.

If you change it's function, it will get recycled sooner since it's less functional.

It's all a moot point though since this all ends up as e-waste. I recommend selling it or donating it because someone will be appreciative of a cheap reliable laptop, and hopefully someday you create a new thinkpad buyer.

That's what happened to me! Started with a 380z! That thing was a heavy beast years and years ago, but it still has the same design solidness as the t42 I'm plugging away on right now!

One day when the price and condition is right i'll finally upgrade to the ultimate 4:3 form factor, a t60 with sxga!

I use my old T22s for old DOS based wargames that require ungodly amounts of available command line real mode RAM. I have mine configured to give 620KB of available real mode memory at the command line. Pacific War runs fine on this. Plus i have a few W9x games that don't like XP. I recently got a 1GHz XSGA+ T22, have to figure out the correct screen drives and that will be a sweet machine.

Re: What to do with old T22? FM Stereo Broadcasting

#11 Post by al7kz » Tue Nov 08, 2011 4:12 pm

FM Broadcasting - FCC Part 15 non-licensed. My station is a T-20 at 1 GHz running XP and ZaraRadio freeware driving a Ramsey Model FM100B FM stereo transmitter , which comes as a kit, RG-59'd to a Ramsey TM100 folded dipole antenna, also a kit. A 2TB USB drive for file storage connected to an Apricorn EZ-USB 2.0 pcmcia card. Output from the transmitter is 25 milliWatts. Line outputs from the FM100B go to my stereo preamp/amp in the shack. I get full quieting coverage for about a 1 mile radius and total coverage with some 'picket fence' reception out to about 3 to 5 miles. My 570 also works for this also but not as efficiently. Lots of Old Time Radio shows sprinkled with classical music or French rap and whatever I want to program in. The FM100 also has microphone input. Fun!

I'm going to try to install FreeNAS on my T23 and see if it will stream 1080p video to a PS3. Probably not very green though if you leave it on all the time.
