Just got my T42!!
I was going to buy from bill (very responsive, great person, sorry I didnt buy from you) but I ended up trading my x31 for a IBM refurbished T42 (with 64mb 9600) and I am simply in awe of its build construction. Its a bit bigger then I am used to but it is very thin. I was able to overclock the video card to 393 core and 245 memory (original core and memory is 321:210). This is only after about 15mins of testing, I am positive I can get it a bit higher when I have the time. The screen is awsome and the ultranav wizard is great. This laptop is a dream!

I am using ati tray tools.
It slowly raises the gpu by 2mhz increments and tests the stability for 15-20 seconds while a 3d object renders itself. It has a threshold of 1 artifact so that if its detected it will automatically lower the clock speed and try again. After a predetermined amount of times the gpu cant be raised any higher it reports to you its findings and you can then try the memory. Its very safe and in worse case scenarios nothing is saved until you tell it to. It can also switch the clock settings when it detects 3d so that you wont have your card overclocked while you are browsing the web.

cool man, i tried using the prog on my desktop (radeon 9500 pro 128mb ram) but i had a couple of problems:
1. i couldnt set up a 2d and a different 3d profile
2. i dont know if i was even able to notice a difference
3. i dont even know if i was able to get the clock speed to change
does turning down the gpu help with battery life? does turning the gpu up eat more battery life? or do you only mess with the gpu when plugged in?

regardless if it runs stable at the time its more than likely going to shorten the life of your gpu, wouldnt you agree?bronevaya wrote:I am using ati tray tools.

I never play any graphic intensive games on the go, but yes, it will eat up more battery life.
to set up a 3d and 2d profile, save your default settings as one profile, then you ocd settings as another
You wont really notice a difference unless your playing a pretty graphic intensive game. Some games will give you a 10-15fps boost.
You need to install the correct drivers to unlock your overclocking ability. Try Omega drivers.

Glad your new machine is working out well!
With regards to the overclocking - I think the ThinkPads with Radeon 9600s have the long fan that has a heatpipe covering the GPU. Minor overclocking should be ok, but it might cause your system fan to run more than usual.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
