What brand laptop would you buy if Lenovo destroys Thinkpads

i would hafta go HP, though know one does the trackpoint keyboard thing quite as good as ibm... i wish they would take the lousy touchpads off the thinkpads though... myabe lenovo will correct that oversite.

If HP still made them like the OmniBook, then I would think about it; the last string of experiences I have had with them were...Nasty by any means. My OmniBook is still going whilst the Pavilion Laptop died.

My work PC is an HP nc 6220. Replacing HP's flat pointing stick cover with a soft-dome TP cover improved it quite a bit. I definitely have more control over the movement now.

My old boss from where I used to work and one of my neighbors both have Hewlett Packard Pavillion laptops, both from about 2000 or so. My neighbor's Pavillion had to have the hard drive replaced as well as the battery before the computer was even 3 years old and both laptops are of somewhat cheap build quality and the keyboards are nothing compared to that of my ThinkPad 600E or 380ED but despite the shortcomings, they both have excellent looking LCDs and they still continue to run and get the job done.

In my experience over the past several years, HP's consumer products are of questionable build quality and are not nearly as solid as a homebuilt computer but nonetheless, they are cheap and get the job done.

If only all of HP's products could have the same build quality as some of their nicer scanners. I have an old HP 4p flatbed that's built like a tank and will probably never die. I also like the quality of thier professional products such as the HP 48SX graphing calculator I use anytime I have a complex math equation to work out.

Right now, I think that if I was forced to give up using a ThinkPad, I'd go with the business oriented HP Compaq series or a Dell Lattitude series laptop. Still, the thought of having to give up the ThinkPad makes me shudder so I'll think and speak of it no more.

Frankly, that is the path to something like Dell; thinking about it some more, I don't want yet another company trying to compete with Dell whilst watching the bottom drop out of everything including price and quality. You shouldn't have to go rushing to the high-ground of excellent quality, expensive Business Laptops like the Thinkpads (or the Powerbooks) every time you want it to last a long time and remain durable. Although, I must admit, paying more for a "luxury" laptop like the Thinkpad is money well spent.
