I have an R&R installation problem on my t43.
I installed windows onto it and have 3 partitions
c: primary, NTFS 2.5 gb free windows installed
d: extended NTFS 2.5gb free
IBM_SERVICE fat32 2.8gb free nothing installed on it
I want to be able to install and start to use ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery v3.01.0037
However when i try to install i get
There is not enough free space in the boot sector to install the rescue and recovery boot manager.
I want to be able to install R&R without having to reinstall windows or at the very worst be able to backup window (with acronis or something) and get R&R working then restore my back up.
So basically what i am asking is how to i get R&R to install without reinstalling windows?
Thanks for any help you can give

T43 R&R Problem
Here is what I could find on your problem.

IBM Rescue and Recovery Deployment GuideVersion 2.0 wrote:To install Rescue and Recovery, eight free sectors must be available in the Master Boot Record on the hard disk. Rescue and Recovery uses a custom Boot Manager in order to enter into the Recovery area.
Some OEMs store pointers to their product recovery code in the Master Boot Record sector. OEM product recovery code may interfere with the Rescue and Recovery Boot Manager installation.
I believe the following includes a version of the above. I have not downloaded it myself. There is more information in the document that you might find useful regarding the installation of Rescue and Recovery.IBM Rescue and Recovery Deployment GuideVersion 2.0 wrote:Installing IBM Rescue and Recovery into a type 12 service partition
You must have the following in order to install Rescue and Recovery into a type 12 service partition:
* The IBMSP.PQI file
* PowerQuest PQDeploy
* Latest installer for IBM Rescue and Recovery
There are several options related to installing the Rescue and Recovery environment in a service partition.
Note: For best results, create the service partition at the end of the drive, rather than the beginning.
To perform the installation, complete the following procedure:
1. Create unallocated space at the end of the hard disk drive.
2. Create three primary partitions of 100 MB (or two additional partitions if you currently have a C drive already partitioned), using a partitioning software tool, such as Partition Magic.
Note: Steps 1 and 2 will ensure that the service partition is the last in the partition table. This is required in order for Rescue and Recovery to install to the service partition correctly.
3. Leave at least 500 MB of unallocated free space at the end of the drive.
4. Using PowerQuest, restore the IBMSP.PQI file to the unallocated free-space.
5. Delete the primary partitions created in step 1 (except the C drive), and then reboot.
Note: System volume information may be on the newly created service partition. The system volume information needs to be deleted through Windows System Restore.
6. Install Rescue and Recovery and reboot when prompted.

Looking at the link I posted above (which is more recent than the document I quoted from), I see that the file is now called SP.PQI . I cannot find it either. It could be an IBM file or a PowerQuest file. Probably you have to have someone that works at IBM or Lenovo to get this file for you.
I do not have Rescue and Recovery 3 installed on my T42. You could try and search your hard drive to see if it is there. Be sure and search Hidden Files and Folders. It may even be located on the service partition somewhere.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
