Which Antivirus is better?

I like to see how other users rate these scanners in terms of detecting/catching, deleting and keeping things smooth on a Windows XP system.

I've used Norton, which did an adequate job as an AV program, but took over the computer to do it, AVG(free) which does a good job for an "average" user but not enough for heavy duty use(like if you receive mail via a link on a web site), Avast!(free) that I installed on a friend's computer that works fine for "average" use, but seems a little complicated to configure for an average user. The last program I ran was Bitdefender 9, a very good AV program, very reasonable prices to buy and to resubscribe, stopped every virus and malware that came it's way. Now I use NOD32, another very good program with a slightly smaller footprint than BitDefender, but it costs a little more.
Keeping in mind that I am more of a heavy-duty user, I have no problems recommending either NOD32 or BitDefender10 if need max protection and are willing to pay $20-30 for it. Otherwise, an average user can use either Avast! or AVG with Firefox and Adaware for free and be OK.

I think its great and I hear its the corporate default at Microsoft.

but it's not quite cheap - I'm thinking about taking Avast or OneCare? Currently I don't know which one I should take...

CA EZtrust.... works well and is completely invisible unless you want it to be.

I've been using the free version of AntiVir for about a year now; no problems. I tried Avast and hated the GUI.

I'm using ESET NOD32 long time and highly recommend that!
Symantec AV also the best but NOD32 better i think

I agree. I didn't vote for Norton in the list, because I didn't want to skew the votes...since the home version of Norton is horrible.

I didn't vote myself either.

I've been using Mcafee since I got my first pc in 90's but recently I am experiencing alot of problems with it. So I think, I will go with NOD32 as some wiseman said majority is authority.

Is it worth to buy a Nod32 AV - or are the free-ones like avast! or AVG also enough for "normal" use (office,internet,...)?? What do you think?

If you define "normal" use as answering emails from your friends and "light" internet use(mainstream websites and forums, no porn or warez sites, stuff like that), if you use Firefox and don't open email from senders you don't know, then you could get by with a free program.
If you get email via a link on a website, go to websites with questionable content or P2P action, then it's worth spending the money to keep safe. Questionable content doesn't always mean X rated or illegal material either. For example, I'm always downloading free programs for photo and video editing, stuff for my CFS2 game, etc. You have to be a little more careful when downloading anything.

A virus thread? How original!

I was using AVG for a while before I encountered lots of BSOD's. They didn't have anything to do with AVG, but I still told it to go away.

I've been using Comodo A/V along with Comodo Firewall, which I had been using for about 6 months. I haven't had any problems with Comodo, and there are less file update interruptions.

I have been using AVG Pro 7.5 and, more recently, Prevx for certain sites and they have all been pretty good. AVG for depth and lightweight and Prevx for catching things that I really didn't pick up with other scanning packages, which is how I came to use it in the first place.

Three posters like NOD 32 by Eset. I just installed the trial version. It stamps its seal below every email I receive. This is not a good feature, in my opinion. Is this feature removable in the licensed version?

I don't remember having to remove it, but it's not doing that here.

You can remove this feature in the IMON POP3 configuration tab.

AVG 7.5 on all of my systems. Does NOD32 possess any particular advantage over AVG?

I'm using AVG 7.5 free on my T40 and it doesn't seem to sap too much CPU cycles etc. that Norton in my experience certainly used to do (talking back in 2003/2004 mind...) and it is VB100 certified (http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/index).

I find the VB100 a good way of checking a virus checker's credentials, it's free to see their reports after signing up.

Notably at the start of last year I was using a PC with Alwil Avast!Antivirus that was kept up to date as can be and it got infected with a virus or two that almost wrecked the system (and managed to deactivate Avast!) so I personally won't use their solution.

Interestingly, Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare fails the VB100 list for Vista.
