HD size after preloaded software?

Does anyone know exactly or approximately how much space is allocated to preloaded software? I am curious to know how much of a 40/60/80 HD will actually be available to me when I receive the TP. I thought I read that the recovery feature stores an image in a hidden partition...that has to eat up quite a bit of space if it is true.

Also, does the preloaded allocation vary between T41/T42?

I see about 3.5GB for the factory restore... double the size, at minimum, if you enable Rapid Restore, which will consume additional space for backup and restore.
Miss my IBM ThinkPad T42p...

i guess 7GB is about right then

On my R50p with preloaded software only, the "60Gb" drive was ~53Gb.

This is down to the HPA and also the fact that the drive has been formatted (NTFS)

when needed, i clone the HDD..
and recover all that space..
and an easy recovery if the HDD dies..

it IS a good idea for many but this one size solution does NOT fit all..! :)

Remember that when looking at the "Properties" of a drive in WinXP or via the System|Manage app, a 60GB drive will read "55.87GB" or so. That's without any hidden partitions or HPA. The actual byte size is 59,999,244,288 hence "60GB" drive designation.

So with a 3GB factory restore HPA, ~53GB is the correct reading... closer to ~50GB (as WinXP would display it) with HPA + Rapid Restore storage space factored in.
