T30 shuts off when toggleing LCD

#1 Post by tfflivemb2 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 7:58 am

I initially posted a comment on this thread, but decided to delete it and start a new thread, because now that I have had a chance to sleep on it, the problem is a little different from the topic that was used on that thread.

My friend has T30 that he just picked up. It boots normally, but when he presses FN + F7 to switch to an external monitor, the entire unit loses power. He has to remove the battery and AC adapter to reset it, to get it to turn back on. Initially, I thought that it might have been a driver issue, but it happens in the BIOS, too.

Any suggestions?

He already has a replacement system board on its way, just in case.

I presume the keyboard has been reseated. I’ve seen this shutdown in other situations such as where a USB harddisk draws more than the rated amperage of the USB port. The analogy suggests a short in the external video output plug/circuit. If it is in the output daughterboard (is there such a thing for a T30?) then a new motherboard is not going to help. Just a thought..

Steve,

The solution is to not use FN+F7.

OK, I got part of the problem wrong....

The LCD doesn't light up at all, and when trying to toggle to test the video on an external monitor, it turns off automatically....to the point that the battery has to be removed to turn it back on.

The question now is whether the LCD/LCD connections are the problem or not. Can your friend take off the LCD connector and trying running off just the external video monitor? Oh, and just make sure the external monitor itself is OK as well. Let's hope we don't have to resort to Dan's lateral-thinking-to-the-extreme suggestion!
Cheers

I might have him put the board back in, since he is having to replace the new board that he just picked up, because of the dead slot issue.

I'll have him try it without the cable connected.

"dead slot issue" ?? Which slot would that be? I'm guessing no power supply to the slot?

Sorry...the dead ram slot issue. It is only reading one stick of ram, but atleast the guy that he bought it from on eBay is replacing it.
