New 802.11n wireless cards

In order to get .n speed, do all devices connected to the network have to be .n? Or can you mix .n .g and .b and have all devices run at their maximum speed?

As for the 3 vs 2 antenna thing, you can use the card with just 2 antennas but you wont get the MIMO which is what N is all about, you get the range and speed since that's what the third antenna brings.

MIMO adds speed, but not range. Assuming that you have channels available for the connection, 802.11n MIMO will simply transmit (or receive) on multiple channels to increase the throughput. That does not have a meaningful effect on the range, though.

I would like to buy Linksys WRT350N to upgrade my LAN to Gbig and Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN PCI-Express to speed up WAN to 802.11n.

But, I don't know if the Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN PCI-Express requierd tree antennas to work in 802.11g. I still haven't found Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN as a FRU for T6x.

Does some one already try Linksys WRT350N with any Thinkpad using 802.11N ?

The bottom line is that I use G network since it’s working faster than N in this setup.

I only have two antennas connected in my laptop so your experience maybe better

Intel 4965AGN cost nearly twice the price of the Atheros one ! I wonder if ii worth...

Traditionally, the Atheros models perform better than Intel.

This hasn't been the case even with G devices for a while. Even with a B device connected most G devices get close to their normal speeds (while still a bit less than ALL G) but it doesn't slow the entire thing to B speeds so i wouldn't assume this is the case with N devices.

Well no wonder, as you saw from my post earlier (read the reply from tomh009 too), you need 3 antenna's to get the speed of N otherwise it'll just be the same as G.

Thank you all for your advice. I also apologize for misunderstanding (I not very good in english). I will cost a lot to upgrade T60p to 802.11n (a least 180 € for Lynksys unit and 80 € for Atheros) and with only two antennas, it can't work in n mode.

Thus a last question : can the WAN antenna be used as thirds antenna ?

If I can't, it's definitively the end of the project. I don't want to by an antenna and open the screen cover to mount it.
