WTB: barebones SXGA+ T4* or 14" UXGA Dell [DONE]
UPDATE: I got what I need
I would like to buy a T4* with 14.1" SXGA+ display or a 14.1" Dell with UXGA (e.g. the Latitude c610) for under $280, plus actual postage. It has to be in good working condition, but does not need to have the following:
RAM
Hard drive
Optical drive (I will be using a travel bezel to reduce weight)
battery
It would be good to have these:
AC adapter
Internal wireless card
Windows COA sticker
Please send me a PM if you have something that meets these criteria!

How about a few T41's with those spec's for under $200?
Check out this seller on eBay - polo_is
His current ads say T40, but the description is for high res T41's.
I bought a very nice X2x from him a while back.
Good luck.

I know the T43 weighs more, but were any changes made to the T41's case?

I saw those auctions before starting this thread. I found them tempting but decided not getting them because too many things were missing, i.e. HD caddy, RAM cover and battery.underclocker wrote:Check out this seller on eBay - polo_is
Tom, you know me so well! Yes, that's the main reason I am seeking a T40. Also, I think it would be easier to get a T40 than a T41 for under $200. Basically, I want an SXGA+ laptop that's as light and as cheap as possible. Both the Panasonic Y series and the Thinkpad X6* tablets are way too expensive.tomh009 wrote:I suspect PW is looking for the lower weight of the T40 ...
No, I didn't weigh it yet. I will when The Spirit of X21 brings his to my lab.tomh009 wrote:He weighed a T40 at 4.5 lbs:

I've been looking for a cheap T4x with an SXGA+ display. I saw polo_is auctions yesterday and this morning I decided to go for it. I realize that it needs quite a few components, but the price was just too good. I'll let you know how things turn out when it arrives.underclocker wrote:Check out this seller on eBay - polo_is

For those that buy one, let us know how it turns out. Like I wrote, I bought an X23 about a year ago from him and it was fine. He called it "as is" but there weren't any issues.
I hope his T4x's are the same - without video chip or USB port issues. I vaguely remember him mentioning these types of issues in units that he knew had them, but again that was about a year ago. His eBay feedback is excellent.

UPDATE: I am now also interested in getting a 14.1" Dell laptop with a UXGA display. In fact, that would be even better than a Thinkpad T4*.

True, a lot is missing. Once cost scenario looks like this;pianowizard wrote:I saw those auctions before starting this thread. I found them tempting but decided not getting them because too many things were missing, i.e. HD caddy, RAM cover and battery.
Included for $217.98 (187.99 plus 29.99 shipping)
# Pentium M 1.5 Ghz
# 256 MB PC2100 DDR
# 14.1" SXGA (1400x1050)
# ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 / 32 Meg
# Intel Pro1000 gigabit Ethernet chipset
# 56k V.92 modem
Needed w/approximate prices
# 256MB RAM - 15
# Battery - 35
# Optical - 35
# HD - 30
# HD cover, tray, and screws - 15
# IBM AC adapter - 20
# RAM cover - 10
Parts total -> $160
So, for about $380, you can build a T41 with SXGA+ that may actually work. It's a bit of a gamble...

What is the IBM model number of the units?smidgley wrote:I just got my T40 ThinkPads from the eBay auction that polo_is had. They are nice enough but they (the two I got, anyway) don't have SXGA+ screens.
Also, you'll definitely have to speak to the seller and request either a return/refund or a partial refund due to lack of SXGA+ - I'd say about $75 to $100, since you can resell the XGA you received.
Let us know how it goes.

That's unacceptable! Definitely ask for a partial refund, or just return it for a full refund. Don't leave any feedback until the issue has been resolved.smidgley wrote:I just got my T40 ThinkPads from the eBay auction that polo_is had.

pianowizard, I think he might have - a search of feedback for poli_is brings up 2 T40s bought by an eBay member with a nearly identical name to smidgley. They have SXGA+ shown in the listing.
This sort of cut and paste IMHO shows how essential it is to get a model number if one's not disclosed, so you can check the validity of the system specs.

The two T40 ThinkPads I got in the auction are 2373-72U, just standard XGA units. I knew when I bid (bought them, actually - it was a buy it now) on them that there was a good chance that is what they would be.
If I was really needing SXGA+ screens or if these were for me to keep, I'd be raising a ruckus but since I'm reselling them (I've been averaging about five a week), it's no big deal, they'll be gone by the end of the week.
It would have been a very good deal if they were SXGA+ but a pretty average price for what they are.

What is the general condition of the units you bought-wear, scratches, etc.? I bought one myself as stated earlier in this thread, and honestly I would not have bought it if I had known it was just the standard XGA LCD. Now that I know I probably will not be getting the SXGA+ screen that was advertised, I am wondering if I should just send it back for a full refund or see if some monetary compensation should be in order. I have already bought a battery plus a couple of other items for it, so I would hate to have to send it back now.
I lost count...
The two I got are really in pretty nice condition (minimal light scratching on the top, no cracked plastic, good keyboards, good LCD), but...there was residue from a security sticker on the top that took a bit to remove. I use Honda (motorcycle) Spray Cleaner to clean these up and I had to spray the spot where the sticker was and let it sit for half an hour to loosen it up. It came off fairly easily then.
