I have a T42, and I've followed all the good advice on this board to install Notebook Hardware Control (nhc), and reduce the Voltage settings.
I've also gotten the ACPI profile to work, but unfortunately it doest seem to work properly. I havent't changed any settings.
As far as i can tell by my settings, the fan should start at level 1, when the CPU reaches 50 degrees, and turn off when it's down to 47...
But at the moment, my CPU is 46 degrees, and the fan's been running for 10 minutes+.
It sometimes stop, when at 46-45, but will then start again, when it hits 47.
It's really frustrating that ACPI doesn't seem to work for me.
Any comments ?
My Fan setting (they are enabled):
Mode (1:Manual l 2: NHC l 3: ACPI) : 3 - is this right ?
Fan Level Off: 0
Fan Low Level: 1
Fan Middle Level:3
Fan High Level: 7
Fan EC controlled: 128
Fan Treshold Temperature: Off->Low: 50
Fan Treshold Temperature: Low->Middle: 55
Fan Treshold Temperature: Middle->High: 60
Fan Treshold Temperature: High->EC: 70
Fan Treshold Temperature: Low->Off: 47
Fan Treshold Temperature: Middle->Low: 50
Fan Treshold Temperature: High->Middle: 55
Fan Treshold Temperature: EC->High: 60

T42 and ACPI in not working properly
Try shift "Mode" to NHC (Mode = 2). Also, see the thread NHC 2 is out! Note that the temperature reported by NHC is some sort of "average" of all temperatures... the CPU, GPU etc. - all those shown under the "Temperature sensors" tab at the page Enable fine-grained fan control with NHC on Thinkpads. Even if your CPU is below the threshold specified, the GPU temperature may typically be higher, and this (the latter) will keep the fan running... that's at least the case on my T42p.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Johan
