I have been using my X300 for three weeks now, so far very pleased with it.
Still, it puzzles me why on earth the people at Lenovo ship the X300 with Diskeeper installed and configured to make frequent defragmentations of the SSD disk. On top of that they also install and configure the Active Protection System to avoid damaging the non-existent spinning disk.
It seems as if Lenovo used for the X300 the standard configuration they have for all their Vista laptops. Is it really that difficult to make a special image for the X300? Even more important if using Diskeeper does no good in a SSD system and will reduce the lifespan of the drive.
Cheers.

APS is builtin in the X300, but is disabled because of the SSD. Shake your X300 and you' ll see that APS will not stop the drive. So you just get the sensor to play some Linux games with itgcoin wrote:On top of that they also install and configure the Active Protection System to avoid damaging the non-existent spinning disk.

Regarding diskeeper, fragmentation isnt a problem of the physical disk. It doesnt matter if spindle or ssd for defragmentation to occur. Its a problem of the filesystem. So fragmentation still occurs. Another story is, if performance will suffer from fragmentation when using an SSD. Fact is, on a very fragmented drive, a lot of space gets unusable. So even with SSD, sooner or later you' ll also want to defrag. Of course not every week (vista' s default, LOL), but perhaps two times a year or so.

But the inherent technology of the SSD drive fragments the files. SSD drives have random algorithms to store data so all of the chips get used and even usage occurs.vpn-user wrote:Regarding diskeeper, fragmentation isnt a problem of the physical disk. The fact is that fragmentation does not cause wasted space. However, due to the nature of SSD writes, I guess fragmentation might decrease write performance in some cases, but the controller logic might deal with that too.vpn-user wrote: Regarding diskeeper, fragmentation isnt a problem of the physical disk.
