T40 processor Upgrade
Is it possible to replace my 1.5 ghz Pentium M (1MB L2 Cache) with a faster processor possibly with 2MB L2 Cache.
BTW - I have a Thinkpad T40 2373-MU4

I tried an expriemnt today. I put a 1.5ghz Dorthan into my T40 and it booted to Bios, but it shut down half way through the windows startup. What could the problem be?
The 1.5ghz Dorthan ws from an R51 and has .09 architecture where my processor has .13 architecture. Could this be of any problem?

A 1.8GHz Dothan works on a T41 with the latest BIOS. To the first question, no, it does not run hotter. Very cool in fact at 37 degrees C most of the time, which is body temperature.
If your upgrade won't run, I concur with the advice to check the BIOS level. You for sure used thermal compound, right? Don't do this without thermal compound. Then, finally, you must consider that the chip or the installation was somehow faulty.
I did my own Dothan upgrade and it works great. ... JD Hurst

That what I thought.
When i put the 1.5 Dorthan processor in it seemed to work at first. Howveer halfway through the windows startup it suddenly powered off.
Does windows need to be reinstalled?

So it IS possible to install a Dothan CPU into a T40? Great!
Heh, I'm new here (hello!), and this was exactly the information I was looking for
As I have searched for concrete data on this, I've seen plenty of contradicting accounts from various sources. Even after comparing the configuration specs from IBM and Intel, I haven't been 100% sure about the thing; for quite some time I was under the impression that the upgrade seems to be all right on T41/42 models and a bit on the shady side on the T40.
I have a T40 with a 1.3 GHz Banias, and I would love to install a faster Dothan. I have opened my T40 twice, installed a WLAN card, and I'm pretty comfortable with tinkering inside this machine. If the upgrade really works, I believe I'm going to do it next week.
But, as you can see, I'm still somewhat skeptical and wanted someone to personally blink me a green light to go ahead and do this
... Aren't there any voltage issues? After the switch, the speedstepping still evidently works as it is supposed to? I'd really appreciate any additional input on this.

I would even settle for a 1.8 GHz Dothan. I'm using my T40 as a mobile audio workstation, overall being extremely happy with a system as trustworthy as this. Still, the adequate DSP performance boost from a 1.3 GHz Banias to the aforementioned CPU is bound to become more and more desirable as realtime algorithms are getting more math-intensive by the minute. Nevertheless, it would have to be possible without sacrificing stability.
This is interesting: in May 2004, it was notified in an Extremetech Dothan preview article, both in the test system summary and in the benchmark graphs, that the machine they used to peek into the performance of "Intel's New Pentium M CPU" was in fact an IBM Thinkpad T40. The CPU is listed as a "1.7GHz Dothan with 2MB L2 and 32KB L1 caches", and other than that, the setup seems to be a plain T40 machine.
