T42 CPU change ?

Hi All,
I have both the t30 and t42p thinkpads and wonder if I can acheive the following?:

The T30 runs the following CPU:

Mobile Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 Processor - M 2.20 GB

Will this fit my T42p I wonder ?,

No, they are different sockets. For the T42P see the Banias and Dothan charts at this link. You want the 400Mhz FSB (400MT/s) CPU's. A Pentium M 765 is the largest CPU for the T42P.

Pardon me for asking, but what is it you seek/sought to obtain; replacing the newer/faster CPU in the T42p by the older/slower CPU of the T30??

... or is your question perhaps: "How can I upgrade the CPU in my a) T42p or in my b) T30"? If you wish to upgrade your T42p, please let us know - there are several ways to do this!

Well you are asking: will it fit?

The answer in YES because fisically the socket is the same. But it won't work, In fact it can even damage your T42 motherboard.

Thanks for the further info chaps and much appreciated.

My idea was really if the t30 fitted the t42p then I was going to swop them so that the faster one was in the T42p which I use the most...dont seem to see many fast cpu`s for this T42p these days on Ebay.co.uk but will keep looking as the existing one is only1.7 and I do have the 2gb of memory and 7200rpm drive but maybe its just me thinking it is not really fast .

Even though the processor in your T42 has a slower clock speed than the one that came in your T30, it is much faster. You'll just have to take our word for it but it's really true. You probably can upgrade it to a faster one but it probably won't make that much difference in real world use.

Welcome to the Forum, Garo!

With respect to upgrading your T42 (which I guess is the one mentioned in your "signature"; a 2379-DXU) then you do have quite a few options; a faster CPU and/or more RAM – since you already have the fastest HDD available; one of the 7200 rpm ones. If you ”only” still have the 512 MB RAM that your T42 originally came with, consider upgrading it with another 1 GB – that’s very cheap these days for you folks in the USA, as evident from the thread FRYS.com: 1GB PC2700 Crucial SODIMM - $10 after rebate!. You will find instructions about how to upgrade the RAM either in the so-called ”HMM”: Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p or via the movies found at Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p.

With respect to upgrading the CPU, you have a few choices; either going to 1.8 GHz, 2.0 GHz or 2.1 GHz – e.g. see the threads T40 Upgrades Help (CPU, RAM, HD) and Upgrade T40 Banias 1.5G to Dothan 2 or 2.1G? and T4Xp motherboards and Upgrade Questions or Search the forum yourself for more information. Going to 1.8 GHz wouldn’t mean much improvement, so I guess that you want to go to either 2.0 GHz or 2.1 GHz. I have seen 2.0 GHz CPU’s go for around $80 on eBay recently, while 2.1 GHz ones go for $150 or more. Consider posting a ”WTB” (Want To Buy) advertisement for one of these CPU’s on the Marketplace on this forum. Before you upgrade anything, I however suggest you consider it worth the time/effort/money - what are the applications for which you need a faster CPU? A 1.7 GHz Dothan will fit most users for typical tasks such as writing, mailing, browsing the internet etc. What are your intended use, for which your current the 1.7 GHz Dothan appear "slow"? Beware that faster CPU's consume more power (and generate more heat!), so your battery time will of course decrease accordingly...!

If you upgrade your current 1.7 GHz CPU, and if you didn’t already have a "long fan" (which covers both the CPU and the GPU), you might want to (and may benefit from) getting one of these "long fans", which are used in the T42/p's with the fastest CPU's. A long (M10) fan for a T42 has FRU (Field Replicable Unit) 41W5204 - see WTB "long fan" for T40p - suggestions? and/or search this forum for 41W5204 or 13R2657. However, you already do have a long fan – as evident from either the HMM mentioned above or from the System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p so you’re all set there (note that the fan mentioned there, the FRU 13R2657, has since been replaced by the newer part with FRU 41W5204).

There is a lot of very useful information available in the archives of this forum, so if in need of more help you can always try first do a quick Search yourself (and if you search for multiple terms, you may use the ”Search for all terms” and you may also restrict your search to only parts of the forum. e.g. this T4x-section).

Many thanks for your time and thoughts. It's heartening to know that I have some options. I hand-built a desktop this time last year because buying off-the-shelf units had little, if any, "future" ability. Since I struggle with ADD it required an effort to do so with appropriate patience. However, with the configuration I put together I hoped for a real future. I just checked some of the latest i7 chips from Intel and most will work well with the desktop, so the time and effort have paid off.

As regards the T42, I still see several more years if I can upgrade the CPU. Not long after getting the unit in early 2004 I added 1 Gb of memory to bring it to 1.5 Gb so performance has been doing well. However, since mid-year I've noticed some drop off. I work for AT&T and so my home machines are used to supplement my company issued notebook when working from home. Personally, I have used the T42 for photo, music and video editing though some of the latter has been moved to the desktop this past year. For work and personal use I'm a heavy user of Google Earth which has required additional work to limit all of its good, but demanding, add-ons.

While writing the post yesterday I did some searching for replacement CPUs based on the Intel box number and found limited units available and priced at US$400+. I'll take your advice and look elsewhere in the forum as well as post a WTB. I'll also double check the fan to confirm what is actually there. If I can get a 2.0 Ghz for under $100 then I see that buying me at least 2 more years of solid performance. I have always liked the Thinkpad form factor, especially the eraser head, so I'd be happy.
I run it on a 1 Gb network at home with a special 16 Mb DSL connection (actually 2x8 Mb circuits) so I can get great throughput not only between machines but to the net as well.

It's really great to find a forum like this. One of the things I have always enjoyed about work is connecting up with really smart people who are willing to swap and share their knowledge. Forums like these are an extension of that. Thank you for your insights - I'll follow up with an outcome over the next few weeks.

Your 2379-DXU should have a long fan in it already. I have the same machine. If it haven't been service since new, you may want to do a general internal cleanup for improved cooling.

The best CPU value is the 1.7Ghz, 735 Dothan. These can be found used for very little money.

Given you had the machine a while already, besides hardware upgrades, you may want to consider an OS rebuild to rid of the junk left in the Windows Registry. This can be done via the Thinkpad Rescue and Recovery utility. I would go ahead and do a backup first just to be safe with the data. Regular HDD cleanup and defrag helps a lot too.

In looking at Intels chip list they show these two eSpecs, both having the same basic attributes (FSB, L2, etc.), same release dates and virtually the same PN.

What's the difference? If I'm selecting one for the T42, do I care?

Main thing to worry about is the stepping. As long as it is B1 and not C0, you should be good.

SL7UZ 2.10 GHz 400 MHz 90 nm B1 2 MB Micro-FCBGA
SL7V3 2.10 GHz 400 MHz 90 nm B1 2 MB Micro-FCPGA

The only correct choice at 2.1GHz is the SL7V3 (FCPGA).
(or SL7EM at 2.0GHz)

The FCBGA models are not pins ... they are ball grid and won't work!

Please search this forum for "SL7EM" and "SL7V3" to find 2.0 vs. 2.1 comments.
