My T41P came with the soft dome mounted. Two other caps came with the unit.Navck wrote:Eeww, I hate the soft dome. It feels "too soft" (Not senstive to my movements), thats why I prefer classic still
Do they put the soft dome on every new TP now? I noticed my friend's R52 has one... I'm hoping the T43 I'm getting has one... *Hoping they give us a 3 pack*

I've finally got around to buying a set of the 3 caps for $5.95 Australian shipped on eBay, so this time next week I'll be able to respond for certain
The classic dome on my T23 is worn and needs replacing, and the soft dome on the T42 does well, but I'm keen to test the soft rim out.

I wonder how many people who participated in this poll have actually tried all three types of Trackpoints. I just can't believe that 37% of the participants voted for the Classic Dome or Cat's Tongue (which I believe are the same thing). Most of these people probably have never used the Soft Dome or Soft Rim, so they are not aware of their advantages.
If many of the participants haven't tried all three kinds, then the result of this poll is meaningless.

Excellent point. The Classic Dome gets worn out much faster than the other types.dr_st wrote:it relies on shape rather than on texture, so it might be longer before it is worn out and needs replacement.

Re: Trackpoint Cap Popularity Contest
I find that I have the most control with the soft rim, and I prefer it the for that reason; I can move the pointer and press to select with the rim, which is nice. The only disadvantage with it for me is that I have a tendency to hit the rim more while typing.
My least favorite is the soft dome because I find that it takes the most effort to move the thing around, probably because it's so "flat." The classic dome/cat's tongue is a compromise -- some kind of happy medium -- and I'm using it now.

Quite a bump.
I liked the cat's tongue in the day, but use the soft dome with studs now. The cat's tongue attracts too much grime, and has to be washed too often.
I would like some more colors, though. (Heresy?)

I use the cat's tongue, the soft dome takes too much pressure to use. The rim isn't bad but never used long term, might give it a go again.
As for other colors, HP has a blue cap that fits, I think the Dell Latitude D series was blue too, but the new Latitude E is grey-ish... looks like an interesting shape.

Hmm, I found it just as responsive once I retweaked the setting.sparta.rising wrote:I use the cat's tongue, the soft dome takes too much pressure to use. The rim isn't bad but never used long term, might give it a go again.
I have some of these cat's tongue ones, but I was more interested in variations of the newer styles. Black, for instance as a more stealthy look. I might go back to cat's tongue if there were even more colors to try too.sparta.rising wrote:As for other colors, HP has a blue cap that fits, I think the Dell Latitude D series was blue too, but the new Latitude E is grey-ish... looks like an interesting shape.

That thread doesn't seem to exist anymore.
I still would like other colors in the styles other than cat's tongue. A black or purple soft dome would be cool. Especially if it glowed in the dark.

Soft rim (i guess that's the name) is my choice, I find it to be easiest on my finger...
OT: that link was in fact this topics link (because vladis opened new thread), I guess mods merged two threads together (but pool is gone, and the sample was pretty good in TPF terms)...

My A21p came with classic dome, my T42p with soft dome, I ordered cap collection and put new soft dome on T42p and soft rim on A21p. I prefer soft dome of all three. Of my three thinkpads only T42p has the trackpad which has been disabled all the time. I hardly connect a mouse to any of them.

Re: what type of trackpoint do you prefer ?
Do you really care provided there is some trackpoint available? Next door they had an HP laptop with a trackpoint (I thought it was unique to IBM/Lenovo) and I used it when trying to sort out a problem for them. It was blue, rather than red, which seemed odd. However, it worked well ... much better than a trackpad, IMO.
My preference is a bluetooth mouse but only when working at a desk.

Toshiba used them too. I think they called it a "Accupoint". They have been purple as well as blue.

Re: what type of trackpoint do you prefer ?
Every TP I've owned came with a (What I thought was) standard Cat's tongue cap, and never use anything else. I'm much more partial to any trackpad than to a touchpad, I like being able to drag&drop as far as i want. The touchpad on my Eee is too small, I have to lift my finger to move a file/folder across the desktop, so i have to use the clicker, which is even worse sometimes. My cousin and his family usually use the reverse dome/cup caps, or the slightly wider than the cat's tongue one thats almost flat, with the bumps....
Anywho, I prefer Cat's tongue (I never called it that, but now when my cat licks me, that's all I'll think of XD) over all others. Just IMO.
