Adding bluetooth to a T41 - 2379DJU?

#1 Post by aphex » Thu Jun 03, 2004 1:52 pm

I opened up my baby two weeks ago or so to change out my 2100b card for the newer 2200bg card.

While inside i noticed what seemed to be two antennas (one white, one grey) coming from the modem (where the bluetooth adaptor would be if i had it).

Is it possible to upgrade my modem to the one that includes bluetooth? If so, does anyone have a part number?

I think it's possible. Part number is here, section 8. There is also a movie showing how to remove and install the CDC card.

Yes, the DJU does have the Bluetooth antenna so all you need to do is replace the Modem Communications Daughter Card (MDC) with the Bluetooth/Modem Communications Daughter Card (BMDC) and also replace the icon plate set to add the Bluetooth icon on your display. Instructions for replacing the part as well as the appropriate part number are found in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464

Be sure you get the original BMDC and not the BMDC2 (which is for T42's).

Csv96,

So basically all T40's and T41's can be upgraded to Bluetooth? Is the antenna installed on the BMD Card?

Thanks,

Go here and type in the FRU number 91P7315 (this is the latest). It will be automatically added to your cart.

Also add the icon plate set (comes with both the bluetooth and non-bluetooth versions):

Clear plate for T40/T40p, T41/T41p series P/N 13N5666

To replace the icon plate, just use a razor blade to lift up one corner of your current icon plate, and then peel it off like a sticker. The replacement icon plate is also just a sticker.

The Thinkpad actually already has the light. The icons are just translucent portions of the "sticker". The clear plate set comes with two sets of "stickers", one set has the Bluetooth icon, one set doesn't.

You can also consider to buy a Bluetooth PC Card from Ebay. Try to get a Bluetooth PC Card II.

Along those same lines, I can't seem to find the 2378-FVU (T42) in the HMM to see if it has the bluetooth antenna installed already. Is there another place to look?

Nope, 2373-1FU model doesn't have the BT antenna in the LCD. You can built in yourself but you'll viod the warranty.

 oh well, maybe taking out the whole LCD just to built in a blue tooth is not such a good idea after all.

Oh well, guess i will be changing the wirless only to 2200BG.

Thanks gman! :o

Since you already have the antenna in the LCD, you just need a clear plate (FRU: 13R2455), and an IBM Integrated Bluetooth III with 56K Modem (BMDC-2) communication daughter card (FRU: 91P7319).

According to the list above, my T40 (2379-D6U) should have the antenna. I've tried searching for it, just to make sure its there before I buy the combo Bluetooth/modem card, but I can't seem to find it. Based on the schematics I've seen, its supposed to come behind the card, from the hinge area. Am I just looking in the wrong place or is it hidden or I do even have it in the first place?

Yes, you should have the BT antenna in the LCD. Check the video and instruction here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-50233 It gives you an idea where to look for the antenna. It's just one wire, not two (like the wireless lan).

Even in the videos for the removal and installation of the CDC I can't seem to see the wire for Bluetooth, just the one for the modem

The clear plate is a kind of sticker. It covers the status indicator LEDs: power, battery, wireless, Caps Lock, Num Lock etc. (it's on the lower right corner of your LCD). The BT LED is already there, but since it's covered with a non-BT clear plate, it cannot be seen. Once you change the clear plate to a BT one it will work just like the wireless status indicator works.

I just called IBM sales/technical support and tried to order the BMDC-2 and the clear plate. They told me that my T42 2378-FVU is not upgrable to bluetooth. Were they wrong?

Yes, they were. Your TP has BT antenna in the LCD. Your TP is listed here. Order it online: Go here and enter the Clear plate's FRU number (13R2455) and the BMDC-2's FRU number (91P7319), and just finish the check out.

based on my experience, you cant go by the HMM as to whether you ahve the BT antenna. i have a 23733VU, which isnt suppsoed to have an antenna, however, just last friday i successfulluy put BT in and everything is working great. even though i wasnt supposed to have an antenna, it was there :D .

ps. it still isnt very cost effective to put internal BT in. i paid 98$ for the adapter, clearplate and shippping when i could have getten the pcmci car for 24$. it is nice to have the factory feel though :)

well after reading all the notes about 2378-fvu being upgradable or not I opened up my FVU and sure enought there is a blue tooth antenna wire tucked in a white sleeve under the modem card....... so it can be upgraded to bluetooth :D
