770x Dead CMOS = Battery Charge Problem

The CMOS Battery expired in my oldest ThinkPad, a 770x, while stored as a reserve machine.

The CMOS replacement is a Energizer CR2025 that is generally available at WalMart. It is a lot easier to replace than the CMOS Battery on the T23.

I did notice that the 770x will NOT recharge the Li-Ion with a dead CMOS battery. This was a surprise to me.

Upon replacement of the CMOS battery, my batteries recharge successfully.

I hope this information helps somene in the future.

Let's just say that the holder on the T23 is a pain Basically, you can replace one of these CMOS batteries with a CR2025 or CR2032 fairly easily by pulling off the welded tabs with pliers and attaching them to a new battery with plastic tape - I've done this several times. Some people don't like the idea, however, and prefer new batteries. Matter of taste and perhaps security - I admit the welded tabs are safer than those simply taped onto the battery.

My first post was going to be a question about my 770z (Which I'm typing this on now )
that wouldn't boot unless plugged into an ac adapter, and i think my CMOS battery might be dead, too! It wouldn't stay in place without a little duct tape (one of the brackets was broken)
but I still get clock errors on startup. I'll replace my CMOS battery once I get mine in my office.

770Z is a classic thinkpad..
it will hot swap the ultrabay devices if running win2000..

Oh, No! No problem, Bill... I was just wondering if you were just commenting on the ThinkPad 770z or if you were trying to help, but you're right, it's solved... Thanks for the reply, I was just curious as to the context.
