FN + F3 --> unable to wake my computer

Last night I didn't want to suspend or hibernate my computer so I pressed FN + F3 to black out the screen of my computer. This morning the computer would not display any image when I moved the mouse, pressed on the keyboard, or even when I pressed the power button (the moon light, indicating standy was not lit). Even when I held down the power button for 5 seconds the Thinkpad would not turn off; I had to remove the battery to restart the computer!

Has this ever happened to anyone before and do you know why this might happen?

Could the unit have gone into standby or hibernated while the display was off? What are your power settings set at while the unit is (I assume) plugged in? Standby after XX minutes? Hibernate after XX minutes?

Theoretically the unit could have gone into standby or hibernated while the display was off (which now that I think about it, it should have probaly done one or the other). You are correct that I have the unit to go into standby after XX minutes and hibernate after XX minutes (controlled by SpeedswitchXP depening on AC or battery). However, it did neither; it didn't standy since the "moon" light didn't turn on nor did it hibernate since I couldn't get the unit to turn on. The only successful way I was able to get the unit to function again was to remove the battery and power cord.

To force a restart you've got to hold the power button down for like 7-10 seconds. That should definitely be not OS dependent.
Try holding it longer, I'm 100% sure battery removal is not needed for a restart.

Thank you for your advice. I know that one can press down the power button to force a shutdown, but for some reason it was not working (maybe I wasn't holding it down for long enough - I can't remember the exact time).

Anyways, has anyone else ever experienced this problem of the computer not waking (I'm not sure if "waking" is the appropriate word -- probaly more along the lines of not displaying any image) from just blacking out the screen?

yes, I have occasionally had my T42 go into a "cationic" state as you describe... it hasn't happened often enough to be an issue.. I've classified it technically as "general computer weirdness"....

A "cationic" state?

If it becomes non-responsive, I'd say that is a negative condition so maybe it should be an "anionic state." Or maybe "catatonic."

Technically it's a PVS, Persistent Vegetative State.

Same resolution, pull the plug!
