THinkpad x300 SSD firmware update issues

#1 Post by DragonCooler » Sun Mar 07, 2010 5:53 pm

I have a thinkpad x300 with the samsung SSD hard drive. The laptop was bought last year and I am trying to upgrade the firmware on it. (BTW does it support TRIM?) The SSD firmware is PS105L16 and the model specifically is MCCOE64G8MPP-0VA.

When I try and update the firmware with the ISO, it will boot into the utility but say no drive to update. When I hit [1] to see the details it says "REMOVE Hard Disk Password"

I have looked in the bios and the password is not set for the hard drive. I do have the supervisor/bios/boot password set which I have removed to see if that was the problem. The other thing I tried is setting a hard drive password and then removing it. None of that helped.

The only thing I think it might be is I did have truecrypt on the hard drive which I have gone through and completely removed it and decrypted the hard drive. Possibly there are still traces of it left on the drive? The only thing I havent done yet is wipe the drive using DD from a linux live CD. I guess, is there even indeed a problem or is my firmware up to date since I having all these issues?

Another possibly related problem I am having is installing windows 7 professional x86 on it. I am currently running windows 7 ultimate x86 and are downgrading to professional. When I load professional it asks for drivers saying it cant find the SSD. Perhaps these 2 are related since the original windows 7 install went just fine. The wierd thing is, when its looking for the driver, I can browse the hard drive, but it still says it needs drivers to find the hard drive.

I really look forward to yall's professional help. Thank you again.

Well I updated the bios from 1.09 to 1.10 and windows still cant see the hard drives. Does anyone know what drivers windows 7 x32 is looking for during this install?

You are having one strange set of problems. Have you tried doing something like hooking up the hard drive in a desktop and trying to run the update CD from there?

No I have not. I dont think it really is an option as I do not have an adapter to go from laptop sata to anything else.

I suppose the firmware isnt that big of a deal, its more the windows 7 issue. Why wont it do anything with the drive? What drivers is it looking for?

SATA is no different between laptop drives and 3.5" drives.

Incorrect sir. 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives have the same connector, but the X300 (and X301, T400s, T410s) use 1.8inch mSATA SSDs. Although there are multiple folks who make the necessary adapters, I use the Addonics Pocket Micro SATA UDD which supports USB or eSATA. Addonics also makes single & dual drive internal versions which fit in an external 3.5inch bay. Alternatively, Lenovo makes two 2.5inch to 1.8inch adapters (FRU 42W8019 & 2W7888) which will let you put your 1.8inch SSD into Thinkpads which take normal 2.5inch hard disks.

Of course, my mistake. I forgot the 1.8" drives used the micro SATA connectors.
