Fan question: 41V9932 vs. 41W6407 on a T60 2007-FUG?

#1 Post by propellen » Sat Aug 21, 2010 1:21 pm

The official fan for T60 2007-FUG is "41W6407", but due to "complications on eBay" (hehe) I was shipped a "41V9932".

The difference between "41V9932" and "41W6407" are emphasized here: [ http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/4723 ... 1w6407.png ]

It can be seen that the CPU heatpipe in "41W6407" is connected to both air channels, thus has better cooling properties!(?)

I've installed the "41V9932" fan. The physical fit is fine, and the system runs cool under normal load - CPU 57C and GPU 65C. However, when running the stress test in "Lenovo's Thinkpad Toolbox" the CPU and GPU gets too hot. I stopped the test when CPU was climbing towards 90C and GPU climbing towards 100C.

When "semi-stressing" the system, playing a fullscreen video on an extended screen, the GPU climbs towards 90C. The CPU stays cool, around 68C. This behavior suggest incorrect GPU cooling, which is only apparant on intensive GPU load.

What do you guys think? Is the "41V9932" fan under-dimensioned for my system, or is the connection between the GPU and the thermal pads faulty? When installing the fan, I cleaned my CPU and GPU with a 70% alcohol disinfection napkin and removed the plastic protectors on the thermal pads.

(Since the system is cool under normal load, using a single screen, I've assumed that the fan is installed correct.)

Your assumption is correct - the fan is installed properly. As you have probably figured out already, 41W6407 is an newer and improved version of 41V9932. Where 41V9932 is marginal is some cases, 41W6407 does the job correctly.

With 41V9932 you are on the edge of its performance characteristics, with no room to spare. If you are hitting its limitations in normal use more often than you wish, then you will be happier with 41W6407. If the problems show up only on "torture" tests, then I would not worry about it ...

[Note: Both FRUs are currently available spare parts direct from IBM, with 41V9932 = $40 new and 41W6407 = $80 new, i.e., they are the "same", and they are not the "same"!]

...Generally within the T60/p - the 41V9932's were mainly used with Core Duo (Yonah) CPU's (Max TDP=31W) and 41W6407's for Core2Duo (Merom) CPU's (Max TDP=34W).

Thanks guys!

Nice to get a confirmation that the fan is under-dimensioned.
I will continue to use the "41V9932", since I rarely reach the extreme system loads where the under-dimension becomes apparent.

FYI: The reason why I got a "41V9932" was because the eBay seller was including both part numbers "41V9932 and 41W6407" in the auction title, while the auction image was of a "41W6407". I was sloppy, made a rough assumption, and didn't confirm the part number with the seller before purchasing, thus I was sent a "41V9932".

Lesson learned: confirm confirm confirm on eBay

Hello,

i have to replace the fan from my T60 (X1400, C2D). Now i have the 41W6407 installed. I will replace ONLY the fan (not the heatpipe). So my question is will the 41V9932 (only fan) fit in the 41W6407 (heatpipe)?

I have heard that the 41V9932 is not so noisy...

Sorry for my bad english.

I would like to know that too.

My fan just died and I have 41w6407 inside, buying the just the 41v9932 fan would be a lot cheaper. So if anybody knows plz reply.

To anybody wondering I ordered an installed 41v9932 fan into 41w6407 heatpipe and everything fits and works perfect.
The temperatures are same as before(t60p with t7200 c2d and firegl v5250).

That sounds good! Can you say anything to the noise? Is the new fan quiet?

I've found the T61p fan works best at cooling T60 machines. Some have been using a T500, but it's a less perfect fit.

I have some of the T61p fans, but if you want a T500 I think other sellers here have them.

TuuS: I (and probably also other forum members and/or lurkers) would appreciate if you would be kind to share specific information about what T61p fans you recommend for use in what T60/p machines. Your above post could seem a bit more "commercially oriented" than informative... and as you will recall from These are the RULES of this ROAD - READ ME NOW the following is said there:
2. The primary purpose of this Forum is to act as an educational forum for the exchange of information for all things Thinkpad. All are encouraged to participate in this information exchange in the spirit of openness and fun. Keeping this place a comfortable and enjoyable place on the Internet to spend your time is strongly encouraged. Emotional outbursts and personal attacks are not.
Thank you in advance for (also in the future!) sharing information for the benefit of the members! By the way, T60/p-owners who wish to quiet down their ThinkPad's may perhaps find useful information in the threads New methods to reduce the fan noise in a T60 or in a T60p and My Frankenpad Conversion and Heat Sink Mods [+PICS].

To emphasize: In my opinion you are certainly an asset (!) for this forum... but regardless of that you may (as many others may as well, me certainly inclusive!) from time to time still have the opportunity to do it even better!

PS: By coincidence, today I replaced a (factory-installed) 41V9932 fan in a T60 (having the X1300 GPU), and upon that I discovered that the workers who had mounted the 91V9932 fan had forgotten (!!) to remove the clear, protective foil on the GPU and Southbridge cooling pads; this very poorly heat-conducting foil was still present! Poor, poor Lenovo-workmanship!
