New Apple OS released today
Being the off-topic section and all, I'd like to report that my PowerBook is now happily running Cupertino's latest and greatest.
Tiger, otherwise known as OS X 10.4, has all the goodies that Microsoft promised will be in Longhorn, but seems to be dropping one-by-one. Personally though, the candy doesn't matter to me, what I like is that it boots in less than 30 seconds.
I lied, the candy is nice too.

PearPC is excruciatingly slow. Of course VirtualPC on a modern Mac is quite useable.
By the way, Darwin is NOT OSX, it is the core, but not the whole package. Emulation is never equal to the real thing, which is why I run Windows and Linux on my ThinkPad and OSX on my PowerBook. Right tool for the job and all that.

But it isn't OSX, its just the core. You can't run OSX applications on it, it lacks the UI and everything else that sets OSX apart from all of the other Unices out there.
If you want to try OSX, just get a Mac. Panther is cheap now that Tiger is out, and it runs very well even on a $200 Blue and White G3 or a $400 500MHz iBook.

On my colleagues 700Mhz G3 iMac Panther is so slow it is almost unusable. The only thing he could get running properly was OSX 9, which I believe is a far inferior OS than 10.xasiafish wrote: If you want to try OSX, just get a Mac. Slow is relative, but Panther is definitely NOT unbearable on a 700MHz G3, unless he only has 128MB of ram, which is what those computers came with. Panther needs at least 256MB and doesn't really perk up until you get to 512MB.
I ran Panther on a B&W G3 350MHz with 512MB RAM and while not exactly fast, it wasn't slow either. The system was fast enough that the I didn't have to stare at spinning beachballs all the time, and it generally stayed out of my way. Tiger is much faster on this machine, but Panther was entirely adequate, and far better than PearPC or any other emulation.
Moving up $100 I also have a 400MHz Power Mac G4 and Panther really flies on it.

I use Panther on an almost daily basis for graphics. (I hope people have realized at this point that my anit-mac thread was a joke.) The computer I use with it is a school computer (yuck), an older 500mhz G3-based iMac w/ either 512mb or 256mb RAM. It runs good, but the screen is sort of small for doing lots of graphics and page layout on. Surprisingly enough, InDesign CS, Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS all seem to run quite nicely one they are loaded. The only problem is the small CRT that only does 1024x768. 1024x768 is good until you use InDesign or Photoshop and have to constantly move the tool palletes around. This is especially hard to do since I have a 19" Samsung on my Athlon rig at home (best computer part I ever spent half a paycheck on) and after having my eyes adjust to it, the small iMac CRT is just small. Though it is nicer than what the school used to have for the printing program. My freshman year, right before they upgraded, we were using 240mhz PowerPC towers w/ 64 and 128mb RAM. We had MacOS 9, Photoshop 6, Illustrator 9 and PageMaker 6.5 on them and I was expecting those boxes to catch fire from the heavy load being put on them at any given moment.
Hey, asiafish, you seem to be sorta Mac-savy, so you'd probably know this. What are the main differences between Panther and Tiger?

The ones I use are ok, in fact, on good days, they are rather fast for their age and specs, I just wish they would have considered that they were purchasing computers for page layout and publsihing and that screen real estate is more important than a flashy blue accrylic chassis. Also, with the iMac, there are no upgrade options. I think either a G4 (G5's didn't exist when the descision was made) or a PC would have been more economical in the long run as you can upgrasde and go longer without replacing the entire unit.

I am sure there are many Tiger previews/reviews out by now, but I found these two interesting since the reviewers are mostly PC users.AlphaKilo470 wrote: Hey, asiafish, you seem to be sorta Mac-savy, so you'd probably know this. What are the main differences between Panther and Tiger?
I am considering getting a PowerBook for my wife, probably wait for a while till they come preinstalled with Tiger.

Panther v. Tiger:
Most of it is eye-candy and toys, though cross-platform networking works better (so far), and it is just faster. Apple's website can spout the new features better than I can.

I don't see any Mac-zealots here, I spend about an equal amount of time in Mac OSX and Windows XP, wiht occasional forrays into Linux (currently SuSe 9.1). What I see is the same Batuta who always believes that he is 100% right and that nobody else knows anything. Sorry bud, you are the only zealot in this thread, not I.
Now if you think that PearPC and Darwin core are really OSX, then just go ahead and keep deluding yourself. Of course, you don't even use PearPC to run Darwin, it is native x86. PearPC is used to run a real OSX, but even on the most powerful desktop systems, be they AMD or Intel, it is still far slower than even the slowest OSX capable Mac with the absolute minimum specs, SO MUCH slower as to be downright annoying and all but unuseable.
Oh, but since you say it is as good as a real Mac, then it must be so.

How much hassle is it to set up PearlPC and would InDesign run ok under it? Also, what would be the system requirements for PearlPC? Also, Batuta, you claim PearlPC runs like a Mac, what is your PC's specs on RAM and CPU?

Bob,
You will love Tiger, the speed boost is most noticeable on older hardware. I wish it would install on my wife's PowerBook (Lombard), but alas it lacks built-in firewire and is thus incompatible.

Why would lack of firewire cause compatibility trouble?

Its not a hardware issue, but a marketing one on Apple's part. Insert the Tiger DVD in a Mac without on-board firewire and it will just give you an error stating that your computer is not compatible.
Apple's website lists all compatible machines, and the Tiger box also states clearly that only built-in-firewire models need apply.
Apple did the same thing 18-months-ago with Panther, when a Mac needed built-in USB to work, strictly for marketing reasons. Apple just wants to get away from supporting older hardware. Actually, the last Macs made without built-in USB were in 1998, and the last Macs without Firewire are from 1999.
OWC (Other World Computing) has a hack utility called XPostFacto that allows the installation of OSX on unsupported older Macs. I am sure a new version will come out soon bringing Tiger to non-Firewire Macs that are otherwise powerful enough to run it, like my wife's Lombard PowerBook (1999).
