9mm SSD in an X230?
Hi everyone,
Unfortunately, I bought a crucial m4 256gb ssd that doesn't fit the hard drive slot on my X230. It's 2.5" but I think its a 9mm one and its just slightly too thick. Does anyone know what I can do to make it fit (Too late to exchange it for a different drive...)?
Thanks!

Not a chance.
Some drives have a removable shim - but not this one.

The shim on that drive IIRC is in the middle. Remove 4 screws at corners, take out plastic spacer, screw cover back on with new screws. I believe screws are M2 by 4.0mm long (really small), but you can try good fastener store just in case.
If there is no black plastic piece in the middle, then you can always take out the center circuit board and mount that only. Not sure if there is enough static or shock to damage a bare SSD board inside the X230 though.

Sell it on eBay or CL and get the drive you want. If you're not using WWAN, I might suggest the mSATA SSD and keeping the hard drive.oldschool30 wrote:Too late to exchange it for a different drive.

That's strange. I also bought a Crucial 256GB SSD drive, it fit perfectly. Would you mind sharing the exact reference of the one you got?
Here's mine:

He has a SATA drive - you have an mSata. The mSata only fits if you have no WAN card.

Thanks guys for the input! I think i'm just gonna remove the plastic piece in the middle then find shorter screws to put into it.
That should be okay right?
