As said above, Lenovo brought back physical F-keys and physical TrackPoint buttons with this iteration. It gets the newest Broadwell i5 CPU.


The T/X/L/E series get their -50 models as well, and they also have physical TrackPoint buttons.

I think Lenovo's decision to go with the trendy button style keyboard was misguided (similarly as bad as the Royal Mail's disastrous decision to re-brand in an attempt to be trendy and up to date)
I hope like the Royal Mail, that Lenovo will realize what an asset they had and bring back the old keyboards soon.

Yes. But as Acer doesn't offer a Hardware Maintenance Manual to users, if the fan get clogged with dust, you need to send the whole notebook in to get the fan cleaned. And that means you need to buy two identical Acer notebooks, in order to have one in reserve while the other one is being serviced. And that is way more expensive than getting one ThinkPad X1 Carbon.

Fortunately, someone managed to obtain a lot of Acer laptop service guides (among other laptops). I wonder where he got them.

I was just look through Lenovo's site comparing the old and new X1 carbon, it seems they changed the paint in the 2015 X1 to a more traditional 'Thinkpad black'? Or is it just the photos?

Windows 8 doesn't need as much RAM as Windows 7 to run well (and that's just one of the many advantages 8 has over 7...).

Even if we were to agree on this statement, that has nothing to do with the point that I was trying to make...

I do understand erik's point and am not disagreeing with it either.

Nevertheless, I still find the soldered RAM setup - on a something that's quite an interesting machine otherwise - completely unacceptable.

While agreeing re Win8 i'm struggling to see the reason for soldering memory in, this isn't a 200USD cheapo netbook.

Still not going to use it.
Though I am getting a bit of a hang with it when fixing a few adware/malware ridden PCs.
I have no need as of yet to use one, maybe when I get a multitouch tablet device.

I wonder if the touchpad of the X1C3 can be used on the 2nd gen X1C given the T440 and X240 can be retrofitted.

Correct. In addition, it's a strategy to force people who need more RAM to pay more up front. If expansion slots were available, most people would opt for the smallest amount of RAM when purchasing the laptop, and upgrade later using 3rd-party modules (which wouldn't benefit Lenovo).

It's sleezeball tactics though. We're not morons here, an 8gig stick costs all of $60. Very very very shortsighted.
