How to brick the fruit device easily

When the date of a 64-bit iOS device is set to January 1, 1970, the device will fail to boot.
Connecting the device to iTunes and restoring the device to factory defaults will not put the device back in working order. Instead, a physical repair is required.

Just the kind of thing that one might actually consider doing to their worst enemy,
just to force them to go to the Genius Bar.

I'm sure a fix that does not require a physical repair will be available in a matter of days.

...worldwide Apple Store are being made aware that disconnecting the battery and reconnecting fixes the issue. It should be common knowledge to all stores worldwide by tomorrow.
It seems like the fix is to simply disconnect the battery. Or maybe "simply" isn't the right word.. I have never worked on any Apple device, except for swapping the battery in an iPhone 4 once.

What is really cool is that theoretically one could put up a small NTP server with a free-access wifi hotsphot, broadcasting NTP data (with the 1970 date sent) to passersby with iphones. Put that close to some Starbucks in a big city, and you're in for a "brickolage"...

They aren't as tedious to open up since the iPhone 5.Norway Pad wrote:...worldwide Apple Store are being made aware that disconnecting the battery and reconnecting fixes the issue. It should be common knowledge to all stores worldwide by tomorrow.

But fixing screens isn't fun when you got severely bent frames.

That date represents the reference date for unix-based systems. So I guess that some bunch of bits inside a Unix-derived operating system gets confused if you say that's the actual date. I don't feel like experimenting with my linux laptop to check if that's true!

If the FBI gets what it wants, there might be a mass-bricking of the fruit next...
