I know about X/T601, there's also an X200/1 frankenpad out there.. but is that all? I'm looking for some fun reads about thinkpad modding. (I know about 600X's AFFS X301, and the X301 in general feels like a very awesome thinkpad - I'd be sad leave my X61 alone so it's not for me.)
Other things I know about are pinmods, X61 CPU mods, LED AFFS screens, touchpad-free palmrests (fwiw, couldn't find a link for that), heatsink mods, and that's all I can think of.
Non-thinkpads are also welcome - but either PM me - or just make a topic in a different forum. Sharing is caring, after all. I'm just curious in some fun modding.
Take a look at our

Re: Is there a list of frankenpads?
That depends on your definition of Frankenpad.
In my view, transplanting hardware from one generation to another generation, but with the same general chassis is not in itself a Frankenpad. So X200/X201, or X60/X61, or T40/T43 are not Frankenpads. Because what you get in the end is roughly the same thing that you could have gotten if you originally had the newer machine (e.g., it's really just an X201 with an X200 label).
The "T601" is the "true Frankenpad" (maybe not the only one, but I cannot think of any other examples off the top of my head, except the very similar "R601") because you created something that never existed in the first place - you take a T60 shell and put in it hardware from a T61 that was never planned to exist in such a shell.
Replacing an individual component like a screen/keyboard with one that was not available originally for the machine is closer to "frankenpadding", but not really, since it's not putting two different machines together. It's just using non-OEM parts in an existing machine. My T430s with IPS screen and classic keyboard is not a 'Frankenpad', it's just a T430s with IPS screen and classic keyboard.
IMO, I would not say you need a list of 'frankenpads', but more a list of common/interesting mods.

Re: Is there a list of thinkpad mods?
That's a nice observation. I thought frankenpad was an analogy to frankenstein - take various parts and build something out of it. I've updated the title accordingly.dr_st wrote: IMO, I would not say you need a list of 'frankenpads', but more a list of common/interesting mods.

There was also the SATA-mod, that was performed mostly on T43/R52 with ATI graphics, less so on T43/R52/X41 with Intel graphics.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
