Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
Hi,
got my W530 home today. It was in mint condition and came with the 2.7ghz quad core cpu, 8gb of 1600mhz ram, 500gb drive and..... not working power supply (which was cosmetically great also).
I have contacted the seller already regarding this, but i'm still curious: do the power bricks contain any fuse inside? I measured the tip of the cable going into the back of the W530 and there was no voltage whatsoever coming out of the power supply.

Re: Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
There's a fuse inside most laptop chargers/AC adapters, usually rated for 240v maybe 2 or so amps (can't remember exactly
), but it's soldered to the circuit board rather than in a fuse holder.
Also, use the multimeter's continuity test mode on the detachable power cord. Sometimes the problem lies there.

Re: Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
There is a relative easy way to convert an ordinary power charger, as small as 65 W, to work with the W540. I saw that on Lenovo forums, or maybe here. Basically you order an adaptor for a few bucks from the charger round plug to the square power connector format. Open up the square plug in the adaptor and take out the resistor and replace it with a 1,800 ohm resistor. It is recommended to use a 90W or 130W charger.

Re: Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
While substituting the resistor inside the connector is a means to fool the laptop into thinking it is connected to a different (usually, higher power) AC adapter, I would NOT recommend doing this. The adapter may not be able to supply enough current to charge the battery and operate the computer at the same time. You could be operating the adapter past its design limits. That may lead to an overheating condition and possibly a fire.

Hi all,
i ended up purchasing two (!) power bricks (well, one by accident in a sense) so i'm good. Besides, dealing with the inner workings of the failed one seemed a tad dangerious also
Thx for very good input.

For our daily driver Thinkpad, we always have three (!) power bricks at ready:
~One at work
~One at home (hey, it is a notebook, right?)
~One permanently packed into our travel bag, ready to go at a moment's notice!

Re: Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
IIRC there's a capacitor on the primary side (operating at mains voltage) which presents a shock hazard even when unplugged.

Re: Replaceable fuse inside the 170w power supply?
8 years later and one of those two power bricks drew its last breath this evening. And honestly, thanks to this thread (where i saw myself referencing a second power brick) i dug through the warm storage and found that other one (
) and so now i'm once again back on the W530.
The symptoms where basically that the charge icon first blinked "orange", followed by 3 fast white blinks (or green) and one longer blink, then repeating.
What is odd is that while i was inside windows before this, the battery icon showed 79% charge on the battery (which might not say much as it probably is quite depleted and discharged rather quickly without the mains psu connected).
In between finding the spare PSU, i did find and order an extra in case (in 7-8 years) this "new" one will fail
