X200 freezes every 1 second

#1 Post by mt12345 » Sat Aug 19, 2017 3:33 am

X200 + SSD + Windows 7

System freezes every 1 second for a split second. Pointer movements are not fluent and there is a metallic sound (glitch) in audio playback.
It's happening for hour or two, then it stops for couple of hours.
I reinstalled windows but it occurs again.
Is my Thinkpad dying?

Windows 7 has gadgets with CPU and memory gauges to indicate what resources are being used. This may or may not help analyse the problem.

Start disabling the internal devices one by one (Ethernet, Wireless, Card Reader, Bluetooth...) and see whether the problem goes away.

Do a search online for: SSD stuttering. Not an uncommon problem.
If you have a spinning HDD around, do an install on it and see if the stuttering stops.

some gamers complain about 'stuttering' when upgrading hdd > sdd.
but in my case nothing changed in my setup in last year.

I did install on old 20GB HDD, connected SSD via sata>usb adaptor and I was playing mp3s and videos whole afternoon and evening.
No stuttering at all. So is it faulty SSD? Im not convinced. I could install ssd in another machine to find out but I dont have any at the moment.

Devices do fail with age or time and SSDs are not immune. See about backing up your data maybe migrating it to a replacement SSD.

There are testing programs which should pick up problems. I have used https://crystalmark.info/software/Cryst ... dex-e.html before. But it does look like you will be purchasing another SSD.
If you go for a secondhand SSD test it immediately when you receive it using the above program. goodluck

If you buy a new SSD I would still recommend to benchmark it as a reference for later checks and to determine wear levels.

So I found some old Toshiba L30 (pentium M, 1GB RAM) laptop, I put ssd and installed 32bit windows 7.
First glitch hit the speakers after 10min of mp3 playback and occurs randomly every 1-5 minutes.
Looks look my old X200 is still fine.
Thanks for help!

I opened the ssd and it turned out there are two nand chips inside (2x64gb).
Assuming that the first one is faulty, I created 55gb partition at the end of disk, installed windows, filled the partition with random stuff up to 75% and carried on working for 2 days.
No stuttering at all.
Then I created second partition on remaining space, filled with mp3s, moved temporary and cache folders there, did hundreds i/o operations (converting wavs and mp3s).
Still no stuttering. :?
Last night I went back to the old scheme (one partition), installed windows, so far so good.
