Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)
Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)
Hello all, I had recently ordered a p52s - and turns out it's at least a month before it's delivered, I was wondering what other current thinkpad models actually support 32 gb either via a custom config, or have non soldered slots that will support 32 gb of ram.
thanks
thanks
Re: Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)
Some of the W520 Series do (the models with 4 RAM slots anyway).
Oops! Just noticed you stated "current"... My bad!

According to Lenovo's official online shop and if you count Kaby Lake or Raven Ridge and later as current models, it would be the E470, E570, E570p, E480, E485, E580, E585, L470, L570, L380, L380 Yoga, L480, L580, A475, T470, T470p, T25, T480, T570, T580, and the P51s.crypto60 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 31, 2018 10:42 amHello all, I had recently ordered a p52s - and turns out it's at least a month before it's delivered, I was wondering what other current thinkpad models actually support 32 gb either via a custom config, or have non soldered slots that will support 32 gb of ram.
I tried my best to make it look organized as possible, though it still looks like a mess. Sorry about that.
Re: Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)
And who needs 32GB of RAM?
Modified T470 to look like TP Anniversary Edition; TP 25; E550; T540p; wants a T420 or P1 to see what's good.
Re: Current Thinkpad models that support 32 gb ram (even unofficially)
less or more what does it cost.
Even my 8GB isnt any cheap.

FYI
I recently upgraded my Thinkpad W701 (purchased in 2010) with 32GB of RAM running Windows 10 prof.
32GB (4x 8GB) RAM DDR3 1600 SAMSUNG PC3-12800S for Lenovo ThinkPad W701, W701ds
... and Yes, it DOES make a difference, especially when multiple browser tabs and other apps like Word, Outlook etc. are active.

[Edit: ** Thanks to Thinkpad4by3 for his info on X390]
Launched in 2018:
Both ThinkPad P1, & X1 Extreme also support >=32 GB RAM
(Both above models have user-replaceable RAM).
Looks like many upcoming ThinkPad models launched later on this year (2019) will support >=32 GB RAM now:
(Note: You may need to check very carefully to see if the RAM is user-replaceable, or soldered down!)
X390**
T490
T490s
T590
P53
P53s
Note: ** The X390 (2019) 13" LCD model is the successor the previous X280 (2018) 12" LCD model.
A bigger LCD screen in a similarly sized chassis!

The 12" X series is dead and replaced by the same size larger screen X390.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Wow, many thanks for your heads up!
Noted that the last model is X280 in 2018, and come 2019 the new replacement model would be a larger screen X390!

I had 32 Gigs already in 2014 on my W530 and sometime even I was running out of memory when doing a complex fractal in apophysis with high precision settings.
Right now 16gigs is the minimum required for new systems and 32 gigs is a mid level for power users, I see people moving towards 64 gigs and a few examples of people going for 128 gigs.
When I bought my P1 first gen I went for ecc ram, since I had the Xeon, so I was limited to 32 gigs, but if I had opted for non ecc ram I could have Installed 64 gigs.

Web browsers alone are horrendous RAM hogs.
When I first installed Ubuntu on my T61 I used the same 32-bit CD on my A31p. An unexpected benefit was no process could exceed 4GB RAM so browsing didn't hang my 8 GB machine!
