W530 w/ 3940XM + G.Skill 1866 DDR3, working?
W530 w/ 3940XM + G.Skill 1866 DDR3, working?
Just was curious about this.
The posts here would say yes to 1866 MHz RAM, but everyone says it has to utilize XMP
G.Skill has said it won't work, and they have also said 'no' to XMP
I take this to mean 'no' across the board? I guess I'll be forced to use CAS9 DDR3 1600?

Re: W530 w/ 3940XM + G.Skill 1866 DDR3, working?
You won't, since there are people who had successfully installed DDR3-1866 modules in their T430/T530/X230. This should be the same for the W530.
There was also a post that confirmed the W530's capability of running XMP RAM modules.

Re: W530 w/ 3940XM + G.Skill 1866 DDR3, working?
They claimed that the RAM is not capable of using XMP, so, this doesn't really clear it up for me

What the manufacturer says and what the hardware can really handle are two completely different things.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Well, if you do think that their claims are true, then I suppose you could go for a different brand. The Ballistix/HyperX/Vengeance line could be a good replacement for your G.Skill modules, but only provided that they don't cost a ton.
I agree with Thinkpad4by3 though, because sometimes the manufacturer isn't exactly honest on what it states about its own hardware.

Re: W530 w/ 3940XM + G.Skill 1866 DDR3, working?
Yeah I figured this. I wanted the G.Skill because of the Cas10 timings combined with 1866MHz clock speed.
I think I'll order it and I'll eat the restocking if it doesn't work.

Some modules may say they require XMP and others may say they don't. Depends on the specific model. Laptop modules on Newegg now don't seem to even mention XMP any more.
I've got 2x8GB DDR3L-1866 G.Skill Ripjaws F3-1866C10D-16GRSL running on an Ivy Bridge Precision M6700 and
2x4GB DDR3L-1866 Crucial Ballistix Sport BLS4G3N18AES4.16FED02 running on a Sandy Bridge Thinkpad X220 (at full speed using modded BIOS)
so I'd expect either of those to work on W530.
