x220 fan replacement switch thermal pad to copper sheet?

I need to replace the fan in my trusty x220, i bought a new x230 fan, thermal grizzly krynout grease, and started researching the replacement procedure. Then i found this thread in Chinese:

Unfortunately i am not a member of the board nor do I speak Chinese, and cannot see the pictures, google translate indicates that the thermal pads have been replaced with 0.3 mm copper plates. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this, and would it be worth the effort?
